Buffs Leave Battle In The Bay With One Concern Fans Will Watch

The Colorado Buffaloes Tennis team battled fiercely in San Francisco, showcasing their resilience against top competitors as they gear up for their next big challenge.

SAN FRANCISCO - Colorado’s trip to Battle in the Bay ended the same way it had unfolded all day Saturday: with the Buffaloes scrapping for every point and pushing both doubles and singles to the edge before coming up just short.

At the California Tennis Club, CU’s Lera Alexin and Ema Bubalo opened the final day with a tight doubles match against Georgia’s Patricija Paukstyte and Nadia Lagaev. The Buffs stayed in it through a back-and-forth set, but the Bulldogs edged out the tiebreaker 8-7 (3).

CU head coach Anthony Pham called it a strong test for his team.

"That was a high-level doubles match today," CU Head Coach Anthony Pham said. "It was well played by both teams, and we unfortunately came out on the short end.

Our doubles play overall was very solid. Served as great preparation for the upcoming regional tournament."

Colorado carried that energy into singles, where Alexin was back on court against USC’s Simone Kay. After dropping the opening set, Alexin forced a second-set tiebreaker and kept the pressure on, but Kay finished it off 7-5 in the breaker.

The day began at 10 a.m. local time with a doubles battle that quickly settled into a grind. Colorado grabbed the first game in straight points, then the teams traded the next two. The Buffs worked their way to a 3-1 lead, held their ground long enough to get the match level at 5-5, and then watched both sides keep matching each other at 6-6 and 7-7 before the tiebreaker decided it.

Paukstyte entered the match with plenty on her résumé, finishing the 2025 season ranked ITA’s No. 55 in singles and No. 6 in doubles with another Georgia teammate.

Alexin’s singles match followed a similar script once the momentum flipped. After giving up the first set, she settled in and made it a fight. The two players traded the first four games, then kept exchanging breaks until the tiebreaker, where Alexin again pushed it close before Kay closed out the set 7-5.

Saturday marked the end of Colorado’s Battle in the Bay 2026 run. The Buffs will head back home and regroup with the rest of the team ahead of the ITA Mountain Region Competition, set for Oct. 13-17.

Texas Tech Fans Stumbled Onto A Colorado Mystery Before Kickoff

Before kickoff in Lubbock, Texas Tech fans reportedly stumbled onto something that looked a lot more useful than a souvenir: a 25-page Colorado game plan playbook found at the Buffaloes team hotel. The document appeared authentic and, to outsiders watching the game unfold, it matched plays Colorado actually used on the field.

For a team already trying to steady itself, the timing could not have been worse. Colorado was beaten 29-7 by Texas Tech in a game defined by turnovers and interceptions, then headed into a bye week with a three-game losing streak hanging over it. Deion Sanders acknowledged the issues and opened up a quarterback competition, leaving the Buffaloes with plenty to sort out and a strange pregame mystery still hanging in the background. Colorado Heads Into Bye Week With A Frustrating New Debate

Colorados trip to Texas Tech offered a little of everything except a complete performance, and that left the Buffaloes heading into the bye week with more questions than answers. Isaac Wilson took the start at quarterback and threw for a career-high 292 yards with a touchdown, but the offense never found enough rhythm to offset the three interceptions, while a defense that held Texas Tech to three first-half points and racked up 11 tackles for loss still watched the game slip away.

Special teams and penalties made the gap too wide to close, from missed field goals to a failed fake punt that short-circuited any chance at momentum. For a team that needed cleaner execution to build on its defensive work, the frustrating part is not just the loss itself but the debate it leaves behind as Colorado gets a week to sort out how to turn the offenses flashes into something more dependable. Colorado Celebrity Sideline Moment Had Buffs Fans Reading One NBA Star

Colorados home game against Texas Tech brought a familiar mix of football and celebrity watching, with several high-profile guests taking in the scene from the sideline. Among the biggest names in the building were Nikola Jokic, DeMar DeRozan and Cam Johnson, and the attention around them quickly became part of the atmosphere as much as the matchup itself.

DeRozan was the one who seemed to embrace the moment most, engaging with fans and giving the sideline the kind of energy Buffaloes supporters have come to expect when a star rolls through Boulder. Jokic, by contrast, drew a different reaction, appearing more reserved and keeping his interactions with attendees to a minimum, a contrast that stood out during a season in which the celebrity turnout around Colorado games has already felt lighter than it has in past years.
