In a spirited showdown under the Florida lights, the No. 51 Colorado Buffaloes tennis team gave it their all but ultimately fell to No. 20 UCF, with a 4-1 scoreline at the USTA National Campus.
Despite the setback, Colorado's head coach, Anthony Pham, expressed pride in his team's grit and determination. The Buffs, now holding a 10-5 overall record and 2-3 in the Big 12, faced challenging windy conditions but created numerous opportunities against a formidable UCF squad, which improved to 11-2 overall and 4-1 in conference play.
The match kicked off with doubles action, where Colorado found themselves trailing after losses at the No. 2 and 3 positions. Ema Bubalo and Anya Nelson battled hard but were outdone by UCF's Vladislava Andreevskaya and Jade Psonka, 6-2.
Similarly, Lera Alexin and Rixt van der Werff fell to UCF's No. 80 duo, Lauren Seye and Olivia Bergler, 6-3, clinching the doubles point for the Knights. Meanwhile, the top doubles match featuring Aya El Sayed and Pia Rebec remained unfinished, with Colorado leading 4-3.
In singles play, Bubalo shone brightly for the Buffs, securing a decisive win at No. 4 against Andreevskaya, 6-1, 6-2, leveling the team score at 1-1. However, UCF quickly regained the lead as El Sayed was bested by Bergler at the top spot, 6-0, 6-4.
The Knights extended their advantage with Rebec's straight-set loss to Marina Gatell, 6-2, 6-0, at No. 3.
The decisive moment came when Jantje Tilbuerger clinched the match for UCF, defeating van der Werff at No. 2, 6-4, 6-0.
Alexin's match at No. 5 went unfinished, though she claimed the first set in a tiebreak. Over at No.
6, Heidi Crncan was in a tight contest with Psonka before the match was left incomplete.
Coach Pham acknowledged UCF's strong performance and shifted focus to their upcoming challenge against No. 36 Houston. As the Buffs look to bounce back, they'll be drawing on the positives from Bubalo's standout performance, which marked her first Big 12 win of the season and her 25th career singles victory.
