PROVO, Utah - Colorado’s doubles push at the ITA Mountain Regional Championships rolled on Friday, and by the end of the day Lera Alexin and Ema Bubalo had locked up a place in the finals.
The second-seeded Buffaloes pair won a tight quarterfinal before taking control of their semifinal against BYU, giving Colorado its biggest result of the day at the BYU courts. They’ll play Saturday for the regional title and an automatic berth into the NCAA Individual Championships.
“Ema and Lera did another really good job of trusting themselves and playing to their strengths during the big moments today in both matches,” CU Head Coach Anthony Pham said. “We are looking forward to putting our best forward and competing hard like we always do.”
Alexin and Bubalo had already advanced through Thursday’s rounds of 32 and 16, then came out Friday and survived a tense quarterfinal against Wyoming’s Silver Bijlsma and Anastasiia Kochelaevskaia. The match turned into a pro-set battle, but Colorado stayed steady when it mattered most and closed out an 8-7(3) win to keep its run alive.
That set up a semifinal rematch with BYU’s Cara Korhonen and Sue Yan Tan, the same Cougars duo that had beaten the Buffs earlier in the tournament. Colorado answered in emphatic fashion, taking the match 6-4, 6-2 to move into Saturday’s championship round.
The final opponent will be either top-seeded Hudson Hawkins and Nicole Mircheva of UNLV or Whitney Moon and Nadia Nemeth of New Mexico State.
Colorado’s other doubles pairing, Pia Rebec and Louise Ternstroem, also reached the quarterfinal stage but ran into a tough BYU team and fell 8-2 to Cara Korhonen and Sue Yan Tan.
In singles, Heidi Crncan’s day ended in the round of 16 against Utah’s Sara Akid, the top singles seed who went undefeated at home last season. Crncan stayed in the fight through both sets, but Akid finished off a 6-1, 6-1 win to end Colorado’s singles run. Yukiko Ikedo also dropped an extra match, losing to Nevada’s Lucie Vagnerova 6-2, 6-3.

Buffs Let A Stronger Start Slip Away At Stanford
Colorado had some early positives at the Stanford Intercollegiate before the opening round settled into a tougher afternoon, leaving the Buffaloes in 14th place after a 15-over-par start. Senior Maya McVey provided the best round for Colorado, carding a 1-over 72 to pace the lineup while the team tried to keep contact with a deep field playing on a demanding course.
Stanford set the tone at the top of the leaderboard, opening at 13-under-par and creating an early gap the Buffaloes will need to chase down. For Colorado, the task now is less about salvaging one round than finding the steadier stretch that can turn a rough opening into a climb over the next 36 holes. [Read more 🡒]
Colorado Heads Into Utah With Key Availability Questions Still Looming
Colorados Week 7 injury report brought a mix of relief and concern as the Buffaloes prepared for Utah, with several names shifting in and out of availability ahead of the trip. Edge rusher Immanuel Ezeogu has been cleared to play, while Lester remains questionable and multiple starters are still dealing with injuries that could affect both sides of the ball.
The bigger changes came with the status of Martinez, who was removed from the injury report, and Perry, who is out for the Utah game. For a Colorado team trying to manage its depth on the fly, those updates only add to the uncertainty surrounding how much of the rotation will actually be available when the Buffaloes take the field. Cherry Creek Faces A Ranking Test Fans Can't Ignore
Cherry Creek heads into Friday night with a test that should tell plenty about where the states top team stands in late-season pressure. The Bruins are No. 1 in Colorado high school football, they lead the 5A Centennial League at 3-0, and they will see a charged Eaglecrest group that has built a 6-1 record and climbed to No. 19 in the state. For Cherry Creek, it is the kind of matchup that goes beyond rankings and asks whether its pace, balance and depth hold up against a quality opponent.
The Broncos bring enough punch to make this interesting, starting with quarterback Will Brinkman and tailback Clyde Surrell on offense, while Cherry Creek counters with Bentley Unruh under center and Elijah Cromwell out of the backfield. Eaglecrest also arrives with a reputation for tough defense, which only adds to the intrigue in a game that could shape the conversation around both teams for the stretch run. For a program with championship expectations, this is the sort of Friday night that can reveal a lot without needing to say everything outright. [Read more 🡒]
