In Boulder, the Colorado Buffaloes' running backs are gearing up for an electrifying season under the guidance of offensive coordinator Brennan Marion's "Go-Go" offense. This fast-paced system is tailor-made for running backs, promising a dynamic and potentially high-scoring season.
Johnnie Mack, the new running backs coach, couldn't hide his enthusiasm after the Buffs' fourth spring practice. He highlighted how the Go-Go offense, with its two-running back sets, is set to maximize the talents of his players.
"If you're not excited for this, I don't know what else to tell you," Mack shared with a smile. The system's versatility allows running backs to shine, whether they're catching passes out of the backfield or charging through defenses.
Sacramento State transfers Jaquail Smith and Damian Henderson II are no strangers to the Go-Go's benefits. Under Marion's leadership last season, they racked up over 1,000 rushing yards and 10 touchdowns.
Their decision to follow Marion to Boulder was likely an easy one. Henderson, who started his college career at Colorado State, expressed his appreciation: "The Go-Go helped me get here today.
It's a well-rounded offense where everybody's gonna eat."
The excitement doesn't stop with Smith and Henderson. Alabama transfer Richard Young, along with returning Buffs Micah Welch and DeKalon Taylor, are also poised to thrive.
Young, a junior, emphasized the collective mindset within the group. "We all fit into it," he said.
"When one eats, we all eat."
Mack had high praise for Welch and Taylor as well. "DT is pretty much all-purpose," Mack noted.
"He can catch, he can run. Micah Welch, with two years of experience, is like a little bowling ball bringing the physicality."
As the Buffs continue their spring camp, anticipation builds for the annual Black and Gold Day spring game at Folsom Field on April 11. With the Go-Go offense in full swing, Colorado's running backs are ready to make their mark.
