On the field, Boo Carter is undeniably talented. His journey, however, has taken a few unexpected turns. After some off-field challenges led to his departure from Tennessee, Carter has found a new home in Colorado, and he's already turning heads.
CU nickel backs coach Kevin Mathis didn't hold back his praise, saying, “He’s probably going to be one of the most talented guys I’ve ever coached, besides Travis (Hunter).”
Standing at 5-foot-11 and weighing 200 pounds, Carter was a highly sought-after defensive back, a four-star recruit with 46 scholarship offers. Although he initially chose Tennessee, where he spent two seasons, things didn’t go smoothly. His time there ended last November following some missed workouts and other challenges.
Despite these hurdles, Colorado saw Carter's potential and believed in providing him with a supportive environment. Mathis emphasized the importance of their relationship, stating, “What can I do to help you?
Because we’re on this journey together. I want you to accomplish your dreams, your goals.”
And it seems Carter is embracing this fresh start. Mathis noted, “Each and every day he’s coming up and he’s being able to talk a little bit more. These kids go through a lot and they gotta have a soft place to come in and be able to talk.”
Carter’s past performances speak volumes about his capabilities. As a true freshman with the Volunteers in 2024, he made the SEC’s All-Freshman team, starting the last five games at the star (nickel) position.
His stats were impressive: sixth on the team in tackles with 38, along with three tackles for loss, a sack, and an interception. Not to mention leading the SEC in punt return average at 16.5 yards.
Last season, he continued to showcase his skills with 25 tackles, 4.5 tackles for loss, a sack, three pass breakups, and three forced fumbles in nine games. His punt return prowess remained evident with an average of 13.2 yards, including a career-long 40-yarder.
Now at CU, Carter is projected as the starter at the nickel spot. Mathis is confident in his abilities, saying, “There’s no doubt about the talent being there, there’s no doubt about his knowledge of the football game. We just need to get him to be consistent on every play.”
The talent and football IQ are undeniable. With the right guidance and consistency, Carter could very well become a key player for the Buffaloes. The journey continues, and all eyes are on Boo Carter as he aims to make his mark in Colorado.
