Arizona State Faces A Personal Colorado Challenge For Kenny Dillingham

Arizona State Coach Kenny Dillingham shares strategic insights and personal connections ahead of a key matchup against Colorado, highlighting both the challenges and shared histories driving the upcoming game.

Arizona State coach Kenny Dillingham is heading into the Nov. 7 matchup in Tempe with more than one familiar face on the Colorado sideline.

The Sun Devils coach said after Nov. 4 practice that he knows what Colorado can bring defensively and offensively, and he singled out two staff members he has worked with before. One is defensive coach Chris Marve, who Dillingham coached alongside at Florida State.

"Coach [Chris] Marve, I worked with him at Florida State. He’s a remarkably smart person," Dillingham told reporters following a Nov. 4 practice.

"Like, he went to Vanderbilt, team captain, like remarkably smart. So he’s going to have some things for us, and he does a great job."

Dillingham expects Marve to bring pressure looks and coverage changes, and the connection runs back to their time with Mike Norvell’s Seminoles before Norvell was dismissed on Nov. 1.

He also spoke highly of Colorado offensive coordinator Brennan Marion, another former colleague.

"Coach Marion does a great job. They’ve always been one of the best rushing teams in the country.

They’ve always ran the ball at a high clip throughout his entire career. I actually worked with him at Arizona State," Dillingham revealed.

"They’ve been playing really good football on offense, specifically the last three weeks."

Marion served as quality control coordinator at Arizona State before his rise continued. At that point, Dillingham was a young offensive analyst. Their coaching paths also overlap through Gus Malzahn, with Marion having played wide receiver for him at Tulsa in the late 2000s and Dillingham later working as offensive coordinator at Auburn.

There is also a player connection in this Big 12 Conference game. Colorado coach Deion Sanders knows Arizona State wide receiver Omarion Miller well.

Miller was one of Sanders’ first recruits in the 2023 class and has become a key target for Dillingham’s offense. He enters the game with 41 catches for 427 yards and three touchdowns. His biggest jump came in 2025, when he posted 45 receptions, 808 yards and eight touchdowns, all career highs, despite Colorado’s 3-9 record.

The native of Vivian, Louisiana, also made a name for himself with a huge second-half stretch against USC in 2023. In that game, he caught seven passes for 196 yards and scored once as USC, led by quarterback Caleb Williams, escaped with a 48-41 win.

Miller has already produced one 100-yard outing for Arizona State, finishing with eight catches for 102 yards and a touchdown against Morgan State on Sept. 5.

He’ll try to bounce back from Halloween, when he had four catches for 37 yards and a touchdown in a 27-20 loss to No. 8 BYU.

Former Buff Could Test Colorados Biggest Defensive Weakness

Arizona State wide receiver Omarion Miller has an unusual edge heading into the matchup with Colorado, and it comes from his past. The former Buffalo spent time in Boulder before moving on to become a key target for the Sun Devils this season, and now he gets a crack at a Colorado defense that has had trouble holding up in pass coverage.

For Colorado, that makes the trip to Tempe feel a little more personal than a typical conference game. The Buffaloes are trying to tighten up a secondary that has been vulnerable, while Millers familiarity with the program adds another layer to an already interesting matchup between two teams that have plenty of familiarity and plenty on the line. Colorado Faces A Brutal Defensive Question In Must Win Road Game

Colorados defense could be walking into a tough road test without a couple of familiar pieces, as the Buffaloes head to Arizona State with some real uncertainty in the middle of the lineup. Starting safety Naeten Mitchell is doubtful because of injury, while defensive tackle Dylan Manuel is also on the doubtful list, leaving Colorado with the possibility of reshuffling key spots at a time when every possession matters.

If Mitchell is unable to go, it would mark his first missed game of the season and put more pressure on the depth behind him. Colorado may have to lean on backups such as Ben Finneseth and Samu Taumanupepe to absorb those snaps, a challenge that only adds to the stakes in a game the Buffaloes need to have. [Read more 🡒]

Colorado Brings A Growing Offensive Concern Into Arizona State

Colorado heads into its Week 10 matchup at Arizona State still sorting through a growing list of offensive injury questions, and the timing is hardly ideal. Deion Sanders offered updates on several players this week, including Welch, who will miss another game, while Scudero, Mitchell and Manuel are all dealing with issues that could affect their availability. The Buffaloes have already had to lean on their depth more than they would like, and the latest round of health concerns only adds to the challenge.

The biggest concern is how much longer Colorado can keep patching things together if the absences keep piling up. Welchs situation has become a lingering problem, and the uncertainty around his status is now stretching deeper into the season, leaving the Buffaloes with fewer reliable options as they try to stay on track in conference play. For a team trying to steady its offense, the margin for error is getting thinner by the week. [Read more 🡒]
