The Colorado Avalanche made a strategic move during the 2024 NHL Entry Draft, picking up nine promising players, including centers Christian Humphreys and Nikita Prishchepov in the seventh round. Prishchepov has already started making waves with the Colorado Eagles, the Avs’ AHL affiliate, and even had a stint in the NHL. Humphreys is looking to carve out his own path, potentially making an even bigger splash.
Humphreys kicked off his journey at the University of Michigan in the 2024-25 season, where he tallied one assist over ten games. Seeking more ice time and development, he transitioned to the OHL, playing 88 games across two seasons and amassing 38 goals and 77 assists. His first year with the Kitchener Rangers saw him notch 33 points, but he exploded in his second year with 82 points in 60 games-a significant leap from the 28 games he played initially.
Despite his success in Kitchener, Humphreys has opted for a new challenge by committing to the University of Minnesota. This move is part of his strategy to further hone his skills and explore new opportunities.
Players often switch to universities for various reasons, whether it's to prepare for life beyond hockey or to compete in a more rigorous program. For Humphreys, who stands at 5-foot-11 and weighs 170 pounds, the move could also be about physical development.
To put things in perspective, consider Gavin Brindley, another center in the Avalanche lineup. At 5-foot-8 and 173 pounds, Brindley has defied expectations, securing a contract extension after 52 games with the Avs this season. Size hasn't held back players like Brad Marchand either, who, despite being on the smaller side, has clinched two Stanley Cups over his 17-year NHL career.
While some may have reservations about Humphreys, the journey of a seventh-round pick is often unpredictable. Unlike Prishchepov, who quickly transitioned to the AHL, Humphreys’ path might be different. Each player develops at their own pace, and for Humphreys, patience and persistence will be key as he continues to evolve and seize opportunities.
