EA Sports has put Connor McDavid alone at the top of NHL 27, and the Edmonton Oilers captain is sitting on a historic 99 overall rating.
That number comes after McDavid led the NHL with 138 points in the 2025-26 regular season, a haul built on 48 goals and a league-best 90 assists. EA Sports says that production made him the obvious choice, and the result is a milestone for the series: McDavid is the first player ever to land a 99 overall in EA Sports NHL.
The rest of the top end is packed with familiar names. Nathan MacKinnon and Nikita Kucherov both checked in at 97, while Leon Draisaitl followed at 96. Macklin Celebrini rounded out the top five with a 95 after his 115-point breakout season.
MacKinnon’s 97 comes after a career-high 53 goals and a year that helped Colorado win the Presidents’ Trophy. Kucherov, meanwhile, finished with 130 points and took home the Hart Trophy as the NHL’s MVP.
EA Sports says the ratings go beyond raw scoring totals, factoring in overall impact, consistency, position and the ability to affect the game at both ends of the ice. That helps explain why McDavid’s blend of speed, puck control and playmaking keeps him in a class of his own, and why Edmonton’s offensive core looks so strong with Draisaitl right behind him at 96.
The top 10 also puts a spotlight on the modern value of elite puck-moving defensemen. Cale Makar, Zach Werenski and Quinn Hughes all landed at 95, giving the list a strong blue-line presence.
Sidney Crosby and David Pastrnak also cracked the top 10, joining a group that mixes established stars with one of the game’s fastest-rising young talents.
EA Sports NHL 27 top 10 highest-rated players:
Connor McDavid - Edmonton Oilers - 99

Former Avalanche Cup Champion Is Closing The Book On His NHL Run
Nicolas Aube-Kubels next stop takes him far from the NHL stage where he made his biggest mark, with the former Avalanche forward set to continue his pro career overseas. Aube-Kubel was part of Colorados 2022 Stanley Cup-winning team, a role that still ties him to one of the franchises most memorable runs, even as his path has since moved through multiple NHL stops.
Dinamo Minsk has now become the latest chapter, giving Aube-Kubel a destination in the Kontinental Hockey League after a career that spanned 310 regular-season games. For Avalanche fans, it is another reminder of how quickly championship rosters can scatter, with one more piece of that title team now closing the book on his NHL run and heading into a long commitment abroad. Avalanche Future Debate Is Back After Brutal Prospect Reality
Colorados all-in approach has always come with a cost, and The Athletics latest look at under-23 talent makes it hard to ignore. Corey Pronmans prospect rankings put the Avalanche near the bottom of the league, a blunt reminder that years of pushing chips to the center of the table have left the organization thin in the pipeline compared with teams stockpiling young talent for the long haul.
That reality is not a shock in Denver, but it does reopen the familiar debate about how long a contender can keep borrowing from tomorrow to chase today. The Avalanche have leaned hard into winning now by moving premium picks and prospects, while clubs like San Jose have built the opposite way and are being rewarded for it. For Colorado, the question is less about whether the roster can compete in the present than what happens when the bill for that strategy comes due. [Read more 🡒]
Colorado Eagles Get An Early Preseason Test Avalanche Fans Should Watch
The Colorado Eagles are getting an early tune-up with some real stakes attached, joining the inaugural Southwest Showdown preseason tournament in Tucson on Sept. 26 and 27. Hosted by the Tucson Roadrunners at Tucson Arena, the event brings together four familiar Western Conference affiliates in the Eagles, Roadrunners, Texas Stars and Henderson Silver Knights, giving Colorado a chance to start sorting out its roster and rhythm before the games count.
The tournament setup also gives fans something to circle on the calendar, with game times and ticket prices already announced along with a slate of fan events. For an Avalanche organization that leans heavily on its AHL pipeline, it is the kind of preseason stage worth watching closely, especially with ticket packages and season-ticket deposit information now in the mix for supporters looking to get in early on the action.
