Nathan MacKinnon Gave Avalanche Fans A Wild Opening Night Debate

In a surprising turn of events during the Avalanche's season opener, Nathan MacKinnon took on Brandt Clarke in a heated on-ice confrontation, showing that even star scorers aren't afraid to drop the gloves.

Nathan MacKinnon added an unexpected wrinkle to Colorado’s season opener Wednesday night in Denver: the Avalanche star dropped the gloves.

With less than seven minutes left in the third period and Colorado leading 6-4, MacKinnon and Los Angeles Kings defenseman Brandt Clarke exchanged heavy whacks while battling in front of the Kings’ net. The sequence escalated quickly, and the two squared off before MacKinnon landed several rights on the young blueliner.

Colorado finished off an 8-4 win, with MacKinnon putting together a two-goal night in 17:44 of ice time. Clarke logged 18:57 and finished with two blocked shots.

Afterward, MacKinnon said he was the one who challenged Clarke to fight.

“It happens. It’s an intense game, and he didn’t say a great word to me, and I didn’t like the word, and yeah we fought,” he said.

The fighting major was only the second of MacKinnon’s NHL career. His other came in December 2024 against Utah Mammoth defenseman Barrett Hayton, a game in which he also had three assists.

MacKinnon is now in his 14th NHL season and has piled up 422 goals and 722 assists for 1,144 points in 951 regular-season games. He has also posted four straight 100-point seasons dating back to 2022-23.

In the playoffs, he has 62 goals and 78 assists for 140 points in 108 games. He was a key part of Colorado’s 2022 Stanley Cup run, scoring 13 goals and adding 11 assists for 24 points that spring.

MacKinnon followed a 2023-24 season in which he finished with 51 goals and 89 assists for 140 points by winning the Hart Memorial Trophy. Last season, his 53 goals earned him the Maurice “Rocket” Richard Trophy as the league’s top goal scorer.

Clarke, 23, is entering his third season as a full-time NHL player. He has 15 goals and 66 assists for 81 points in 186 career regular-season games, along with two goals and an assist in 10 playoff appearances.

Brock Nelson Just Put Early Pressure On A Key Avalanche Question

Brock Nelson wasted little time giving the Avalanche something to build on in the opening game of the 2026-27 season, scoring Colorados first goal against the Kings on the power play. It fit the pattern the Avalanche have developed over the past five years, with a different player finding the net first in each season, and it also served as an early reminder of why Nelson was such an important addition after putting up 33 goals in 81 games last season.

For Colorado, the goal did more than open the scoring. It also nudged an underlying question back into view: who will emerge as the most reliable early-season finisher and help settle the clubs offensive hierarchy as the games start to matter? Nelson answered on night one, and the Avalanche will spend the next stretch finding out whether that first strike is the start of something bigger. [Read more 🡒]

Nathan MacKinnon Sent An Early Message Avalanche Fans Loved

Opening night had the usual buzz around the Avalanche, but Nathan MacKinnon added a jolt of edge right away against the Kings. After a hit on Cale Makar, MacKinnon went after Brandt Clarke and dropped the gloves, a rare scene for a player known far more for his offense than for spending time in the penalty box.

It was MacKinnons ninth career fight and his first since 2022, a reminder that even Colorados most dynamic star can still set a tone the old-fashioned way. The Avalanche rolled to an 8-4 win, and the sequence stood out as much for what it said about the teams response as for the scoreboard. [Read more 🡒]

Avalanche Opened With Firepower But One Problem Fans Cant Ignore

The Avalanche came out flying in their season opener and left little doubt about their offensive ceiling in an 8-4 win over the Kings. Nathan MacKinnon scored twice, Brock Nelson added three points, and Colorados power play looked sharp right away, cashing in on four of five chances.

Even with that kind of firepower, the game also showed why the opener can be such a useful reality check. Colorado gave up four goals, including two while shorthanded, and Mackenzie Blackwood faced 31 shots in his debut with the club, stopping 27 of them. The attack was obvious from the start, but the details on the other end are the part fans will keep watching. [Read more 🡒]
