The Mikko Rantanen trade that stunned Colorado fans in 2025 may not have been as straightforward as it looked in the moment.
On Thursday’s edition of the 32 Thoughts Podcast, Elliotte Friedman said the whole thing was close to falling apart. While discussing the Carolina Hurricanes’ interest in Connor Hellebuyck, he used the Rantanen situation to show how Carolina operates - and noted that the Hurricanes actually wanted Elias Pettersson of the Vancouver Canucks, not Rantanen from Colorado.
“When they (Carolina) traded for Rantanen from Colorado, so that night, I actually heard about (Elias) Pettersson from Vancouver, and they had two deals on the table. I was slow to turn to pivot to Rantanen because I thought Pettersson was going to get done.”
That turned the night into a scramble. Carolina reportedly had both options in play, but when the pressure point arrived, the Hurricanes essentially told Colorado and Vancouver it was time to make their best offer.
Colorado answered. Vancouver didn’t.
“So, that night, it was either Rantanen or it was Pettersson. And, I guess they said to both Colorado and Vancouver, ‘It’s time… It’s time for your best.’ And Colorado came forward with the deal that they took, and Vancouver just didn’t.”
Colorado’s response sent Rantanen to Carolina and brought Martin Necas back the other way. In the end, that package has looked like a fit for the Avalanche, with Necas becoming the kind of player many expected him to be.
Some of that, of course, comes from skating alongside Nathan MacKinnon. But the key point is that Colorado moved decisively when the chance was there.
Rantanen later said he was blindsided by the trade, but Friedman’s account adds another layer to the story: the Avalanche were willing to act, and they got the deal done before the whole thing could slip away.

Avalanche Just Teased A Uniform Twist Fans Have Wanted For Years
The Avalanche may be a year away from putting a fresh look on the ice, but the first hint of what is coming has already set off plenty of talk. Around the league, NHL teams are expected to roll out newly designed uniforms in the 2026-27 season as part of the leagues Hometown Remix theme, and Colorado added fuel to the speculation with a scrambled-word tease on social media that appears to point to Fully Frosted.
For Avalanche fans, the teaser lands in a familiar sweet spot because any uniform reveal tends to stir up memories of the teams older identities and the logo ideas that have lingered in fan wish lists for years. The design details are still under wraps, with nothing official confirmed yet, but the hint was enough to send supporters guessing about whether Colorado might finally lean into a throwback element people have wanted back for a long time. Avalanche Were Closer Than Fans Realized To Avoiding The Rantanen Shock
The Mikko Rantanen deal that jolted Colorado last season might not have happened at all if Carolina had gotten its first choice. According to Elliotte Friedman on the 32 Thoughts Podcast, the Hurricanes initially pushed to land Elias Pettersson from Vancouver instead of turning to Rantanen, a detail that adds another layer to one of the more surprising moves in recent Avalanche memory.
Carolina effectively put both clubs on a now-or-never clock, and Vancouver passed. Colorado did not, which sent Rantanen to the Hurricanes and Martin Necas back the other way. For Avalanche fans, it is a reminder that the trade market can hinge on a single decision, and that the franchise was much closer than it seemed to dodging the shock altogether. [Read more 🡒]
Avalanche Fourth Line Battle Just Took A Tough Turn
The Avalanches bottom-six picture shifted again with Gavin Brindley being sent back to the Colorado Eagles, trimming the active roster to 21 players just as the team starts to get healthier. Logan OConnor is expected to come off long-term injured reserve for the next game, and Nicolas Roy is making progress in his recovery, giving Colorado a chance to stabilize a group that has been in flux for much of the early season.
Even with those reinforcements on the horizon, the fourth line still looks like a spot the Avalanche may want to shore up. The club is considering a recall from the AHL to add support, which would give the coaches another option as they try to settle the depth chart and keep the lineup balanced during this stretch of the schedule.
