Mackenzie Blackwood is heading into 2026-27 with something he didn’t have last year: a healthy offseason with the Avalanche.
That alone has changed the feel around his preparation. Blackwood was a full participant in training camp and the preseason after missing all of 2025’s camp, and he didn’t make his campaign debut until November 1st, 2025. This time around, he arrived able to build instead of chase.
Blackwood said that made a real difference after what he described as an inconsistent 2025-26 season.
“Just not playing catch-up,” Blackwood said. “Get to get rolling right from the get-go, so that's going a lot better this year.”
The results from last season still paint the picture of a goalie who produced solid numbers despite the disrupted start. In 2025-26, Blackwood went 23-10-2 with a .904 save percentage, a 2.51 goals-against average and three shutouts in the regular season. He also went 1-1 in the playoffs, posting a .890 save percentage and a 2.82 goals-against average.
Avalanche head coach Jared Bednar said the work Blackwood put in during the offseason was obvious as camp opened.
“He put a tremendous amount of work in to come in the best shape of his life,” Bednar said about Blackwood. “...I'm excited for like the season that he has the potential to have.”
Bednar also made it clear what he wants to see next: Blackwood turning that preparation into a bigger role in net.
“That's [why] he's here,” Bednar said. “That's why we signed him.
I think his potential is through the roof, and we haven't seen the best of him yet. And I don't think like over the course of his career, I think he's still got another step that he can take, and I'm hoping that's this year.
I think he's put himself in a real good spot to do that.”
Now entering his third season with Colorado, Blackwood says the focus is simple.
“Come in every day and work hard and play as best hockey as I can,” Blackwood said. “And give the team a chance to win.”

Avalanche Just Made Their Commitment To Jared Bednar Crystal Clear
Jared Bednars run behind the Avalanche bench is set to stretch well beyond this season, with Colorado locking in its head coach on a four-year extension that begins in the 2027-28 season. It is the latest sign that the organization still sees Bednar as a central piece of its identity, even as he heads into his 11th year with the club and continues to own the franchise marks for regular-season and playoff wins.
For an Avalanche team built around stability at the top, the timing says plenty about where the front office wants this to go next. Team president Joe Sakic and Bednar both framed the extension in positive terms, pointing toward the same long view: keeping the foundation intact and pushing for more success in the years ahead. Avalanche Just Made Their Faith In Jared Bednar Crystal Clear
The Avalanche made their coaching priorities plain on the eve of a matchup with the Kings, locking in Jared Bednar on a four-season contract extension. It is the latest sign of how firmly the organization views Bednar as the voice behind one of the NHLs steadier contenders, and it comes after he has been behind the bench in Colorado since 2016.
Bednars tenure has already included a Stanley Cup title in the 2021-22 season, giving the extension a clear backdrop of trust and continuity. For the Avalanche, this is less about making a splash than reinforcing the structure they believe has kept them in the leagues upper tier, even as the season moves into another high-stakes stretch. Avalanche Opener Is Built Around What Ball Arena Can Bring
The Avalanche will open the 2026-27 season against the Los Angeles Kings at Ball Arena, and the setting feels built for a night when the building matters as much as the matchup. Colorado has leaned on its home crowd for years, and Nazem Kadris comments this week put a familiar spotlight on the kind of energy and loyalty Avalanche fans bring when the stakes rise.
The opener also carries a little extra edge because of the teams previous playoff meeting, which still shapes how this one is viewed in Denver. Opening night should bring the usual mix of noise, anticipation and a little memory, with Ball Arena expected to provide the kind of atmosphere that can make a simple season debut feel bigger right away.
