Jared Bednar Sends Blunt Message After Canucks Loss

In a candid critique following a stunning loss to the Canucks, Avalanche coach Jared Bednar delivers a powerful message on accountability ahead of the playoff push.

The Colorado Avalanche entered their matchup against the Vancouver Canucks at Ball Arena as the heavy favorites. However, the night took an unexpected turn as the Avalanche fell 8-6 to a team struggling at the bottom of the NHL standings. It was a tough pill to swallow, and Coach Jared Bednar didn't mince words post-game, emphasizing that their performance was simply not up to par.

“You can’t just show up for 20 minutes and expect to win,” Bednar remarked. “We had a solid third period, but in this league, you need a full 60-minute effort.

We weren’t even close to that tonight. Our first period was shaky, and the second was even worse.”

The absence of star defenseman Cale Makar, who was sidelined due to an injury sustained in a dominant 9-2 victory over the Calgary Flames, was palpable. The Avalanche defense appeared disoriented, conceding a goal just 29 seconds into the game. Although they quickly equalized, the Canucks capitalized on defensive lapses, netting two more goals in the first period.

The situation deteriorated in the second period as goalie MacKenzie Blackwood faced a relentless Canucks offense, allowing three more goals. Trailing 6-2, Bednar made the call to pull Blackwood.

The Avalanche showed resilience, rallying with four straight goals to tie the game. Yet, the Canucks regained control, scoring a decisive seventh goal and sealing the win with an empty-netter.

The Avalanche's performance on Nordiques throwback night highlighted recurring issues, particularly their tendency to concede early goals. Bednar was candid about the implications: “There’s no excuse. If we start making excuses for performances like this, our playoff run will be short-lived.”

With just eight games remaining, the Avalanche need to sharpen their form, starting with a crucial game against divisional rivals, the Dallas Stars. This matchup could serve as a playoff preview, making it a critical test for the Avalanche as they aim to find their stride.
