Former Avalanche Forward Suddenly Has A Shot To Return At Ball Arena

The Toronto Maple Leafs turn to experienced forward Miles Wood, recalling the former Colorado Avalanche star known for his playoff prowess, as they look to reinvigorate their roster.

Miles Wood may be on the verge of his first game for the Toronto Maple Leafs, and the timing could hardly be more interesting: his debut might come Saturday night at Ball Arena against the Colorado Avalanche, the team he once helped lift to one of its biggest playoff moments.

Toronto recalled Wood from the AHL’s Toronto Marlies on Friday, putting the former Avalanche forward back in the NHL picture. The Maple Leafs visit Colorado next, giving Wood a chance to suit up against the franchise where he spent two seasons before being dealt to the Columbus Blue Jackets in the summer of 2025.

Wood’s Colorado stint was a productive one in the role he’s long filled around the league. In 111 regular-season games with the Avalanche, he posted 13 goals and 21 assists for 34 points while bringing speed and physicality to the bottom six.

Still, Avalanche fans are far more likely to remember one night than the full body of work.

In Game 1 of Colorado’s second-round playoff series against the Dallas Stars in 2024, the Avalanche fell behind 3-0 before storming back with four straight goals. Wood then finished the comeback in style, breaking in alone on Jake Oettinger and scoring the overtime winner. Ball Arena erupted, and the goal became one of the defining highlights of his time in Denver.

Colorado went on to lose that series in six games, but Wood’s overtime strike remained a signature moment.

His run with the Avalanche ended the next summer, when Colorado sent Wood and Charlie Coyle to Columbus in exchange for forward prospect Gavin Brindley and two draft picks. He played 54 games for the Blue Jackets last season, finishing with eight goals and six assists for 14 points.

The 31-year-old has spent much of his career in a bottom-six role. Before Colorado, he was with the New Jersey Devils, where he reached double-digit goals five times, including seasons with 19 and 17.

Toronto picked up Wood from Columbus shortly before the season began as part of the trade involving Kirill Marchenko and Matthew Knies. He was assigned to the Marlies and had not appeared in either of the team’s first two games before Friday’s recall.

The Maple Leafs enter Saturday at 2-2-1 after a shootout loss to the Vegas Golden Knights. If Wood gets into the lineup, his first game in blue and white could come in the same building where he once delivered a playoff finish Avalanche fans still won’t forget.

Avalanche Send An Early Message With One Defense Decision

Sam Malinskis start to the season has quickly become one of the more interesting roster storylines for the Avalanche, especially for a player who was such a steady presence a year ago. After playing every game last season and earning a four-year extension, he found himself on the outside looking in as Jared Bednar shuffled the blue line and gave Noah Juulsen a shot in a recent matchup with Calgary.

The move fit the message Bednar has been sending early: no one on the defense is locked into anything if the play is not there. Juulsens insertion came in a 7-3 win over the Flames, and while the Avalanche clearly like Malinskis long-term profile, his early struggles have opened the door to more competition than he has faced since establishing himself. For a team trying to settle its defensive mix, that is a reminder that recent performance can matter more than what happened last spring. [Read more 🡒]

Avalanche Reunion Night Comes With One Intriguing Lineup Twist

The Avalanche will get a familiar visit to Ball Arena when the Maple Leafs roll into town carrying a couple of old Colorado faces on the roster. Nick Blankenburg and Miles Wood both have recent ties to the franchise, and their presence adds a little extra texture to a night that already has a reunion feel for fans who still remember them in burgundy and blue.

Blankenburg is the more interesting name to watch because Toronto may need him to step in after an injury to Oliver Ekman-Larsson. Wood is also back with the big club after a recent AHL recall, though he is not expected to play, which leaves one small lineup wrinkle still worth monitoring before puck drop. [Read more 🡒]

Avalanche Just Set Up A Goalie Decision That Could Open Space

Trent Miners path back to Colorados crease took a small step forward this week, with the depth goaltender fully recovered from the preseason injury that sidelined him to start the year and now exposed to waivers. For the Avalanche, its the kind of roster housekeeping that often goes unnoticed outside the room, but it can matter when a club is managing every last bit of flexibility around its goalie depth.

Miner is in the final season of his two-year, two-way deal, and the timing adds another layer to the decision. If he goes unclaimed by Sundays 1 p.m. CT waiver deadline, Colorado will move on from a little salary-cap baggage and keep sorting out its goaltending picture, while Miners status for the rest of the season will still carry some real stakes with free agency in view if he doesnt hit certain NHL thresholds.
