The Colorado Avalanche and Dallas Stars are neck-and-neck in a thrilling Central Division race, with late-season surges and key injuries setting the stage for a dramatic showdown. Thomas Harley’s overtime heroics have only added to the excitement.
The Avalanche have clawed their way back to the top of the NHL power rankings, overcoming adversity in tough divisional matchups. They found themselves trailing 3-1 against the Stars and later 2-1 against the Minnesota Wild. But in true Colorado fashion, they rallied late to secure crucial victories, keeping the race for the Central Division wide open.
Currently, the Stars (42-14-10, 94 points) are just three points shy of the Avalanche (44-12-9), making the final stretch of the regular season a nail-biter.
Dallas Closes the Gap
Thomas Harley was the man of the moment, scoring just over two minutes into overtime to give Dallas a thrilling 3-2 victory over Detroit. This goal not only sealed the win but also tied a franchise record with a 15-game point streak.
Harley’s breakaway goal, coming 2:06 into overtime, showcased his speed and skill. With open ice ahead, he snapped a shot past the goaltender, sending the home crowd into a frenzy. This dramatic finish was set up by Detroit’s late equalizer, as Lucas Raymond tied the game 2-2 with just over three minutes left in regulation.
“There’s a lot of open ice in overtime,” Harley said. “I love playing offense, and it fits me well.
Winning is fun, even if we blew a two-goal lead. Two points are two points.”
This victory extended Dallas’ impressive run to 15 straight games with at least a point (14-0-1), matching a franchise record from the late '90s. Their current surge included a franchise-record 10-game winning streak, which ended in a shootout loss to Colorado.
Dallas has seen contributions from across its roster, a crucial factor in maintaining momentum during this grueling stretch.
“I thought we played well tonight,” said forward Matt Duchene. “We didn’t give up many scoring chances.
It’s a tough schedule, but we’re finding ways to win. Harley’s goal was huge, and different guys are stepping up at the right times.”
Kadri Boosts Colorado
Colorado’s late-season push has been fueled by the dramatic return of Nazem Kadri. Reacquired just before the trade deadline, Kadri received a warm welcome in Denver ahead of Colorado’s shootout victory over Minnesota. His presence has brought veteran savvy, physicality, and offensive depth as the playoff race heats up.
Still, the battle for the Central Division crown is far from over. The Stars have 16 games left, while the Avalanche have 17. Both teams play once more before their anticipated showdown at Ball Arena on Wednesday night.
Colorado is currently without captain Gabriel Landeskog, who’s recovering from a lower-body injury. Forward Logan O'Connor is also nearing a return after hip surgery.
Dallas is managing its own injury woes, awaiting the return of star forward Mikko Rantanen, who was injured during the 2026 Winter Olympics.
With the division lead tightening and a head-to-head matchup on the horizon, this could be a defining stretch of the season. It’s all coming down to the wire.
