The Colorado Eagles were one stop away from forcing extra time, but Coachella Valley found the dagger anyway.
John Hayden scored with 8.8 seconds left in regulation on Wednesday night, lifting the Firebirds to a 2-1 win over the Eagles in Palm Desert, CA. Colorado got its lone goal from Gavin Brindley, while Trent Miner took the loss after allowing two goals on 28 shots. At the other end, Nikke Kokko was sharp for Coachella Valley, turning aside 27 of 28 for his fourth win of the season.
Colorado opened the scoring late in the first period after doing the dirty work in front of the net. Following a pair of successful penalty kills against Coachella Valley power plays, Brindley pounced on a rebound in the crease and jammed it home with 2:51 left in the frame. Even though the Eagles were outshot 10-8 in the period, they carried a 1-0 lead into the first intermission.
That edge didn’t last long. Just 1:18 into the second period, Eduard Sale got a pass at the side of the crease and slipped it past Miner to bring the Firebirds even at 1-1.
From there, the game stayed locked up through a tense third period. Colorado killed off Coachella Valley’s third power play of the night and kept battling for a result, but the final bounce went the Firebirds’ way. A faceoff in the Eagles zone ended up on Hayden’s stick, and he buried a wrister from the circle to win it for Coachella Valley with 8.8 seconds remaining.
Colorado finished 0-for-1 on the power play and went a perfect 3-for-3 on the penalty kill.

Avalanche Have A Bigger Problem Than Scott Wedgewood
Scott Wedgewoods rough start in Colorado has put a spotlight on the Avalanches backup goaltending, but the bigger issue may be whats happening in front of him. Through five games, he has posted a 4.02 goals-against average and an .867 save percentage, numbers that reflect a goalie who has handled low-danger looks reasonably well while getting exposed when the chances get harder.
The concern for the Avalanche is that the shot quality against them has been too good too often, with too many high-danger opportunities and too many pucks reaching the net unblocked. In that light, the conversation is not just about Wedgewoods performance, but about how Colorado manages him in back-to-back situations and whether a different deployment plan can help limit the damage when the schedule tightens up. Avalanche Scoring Masked A Problem That Could Haunt Their Playoff Push
The Avalanches offense can still make a game look manageable in a hurry, but the 7-2 loss to the Blue Jackets was a reminder that scoring alone is not going to carry them through the spring. Colorado has been piling up goals, yet the bigger concern has been the other end of the ice, where goaltending consistency and defensive structure have become harder to ignore as the playoff race tightens.
Scott Wedgewoods recent struggles have only sharpened the conversation, while Mackenzie Blackwood is starting to look like the clubs primary option in net. Add in the injuries to Josh Manson and Zachary LHeureux, and the Avalanche are dealing with a thinner defensive picture than they would like this late in the season, with little margin for the kind of lapses that turned this one into a lopsided result. Avalanche Response After That No Show Could Shape A Bigger Problem
The Avalanche head into their meeting with Nashville still carrying the sting of a poor showing against Columbus, a game that left Jared Bednar looking for sharper habits and a cleaner overall response. Colorado has been one of the leagues more dangerous teams when it is on its game, but the coach made clear that consistency and defensive structure have to come first if the group wants to settle back into its usual rhythm.
Bednar has already hinted at possible lineup changes as part of that reset, with the focus on getting back to fundamentals and giving the goaltending more support. For Colorado, the concern is not just one bad night but whether the breakdowns that led to too many high-danger chances against become a pattern, and the next few games should say plenty about how serious the Avalanche are about fixing it.
