Felix Unger Sorum Lifts Wolves Past Eagles in Overtime Thriller

LOVELAND, CO - Friday night in Loveland gave us the kind of back-and-forth battle that reminds you why hockey in February still hits different. It was fast, physical, and full of momentum swings - and when the dust settled, it was Chicago’s Felix Unger Sorum who had the final word.

The 19-year-old forward netted two goals on the night, including the game-winner just 56 seconds into overtime, as the Wolves edged the Colorado Eagles 5-4 in a wild one.

Unger Sorum opened the scoring late in the first period, cashing in on Chicago’s lone power play opportunity of the frame. He let go of a wrister from the bottom of the right-wing circle that beat Isak Posch clean - his ninth goal of the year, and a sign of things to come.

That early lead came despite Colorado outshooting the Wolves 15-4 in the first. The Eagles had their chances - three power plays worth, in fact - but couldn’t find a way past Cayden Primeau, who was sharp from the opening puck drop.

Chicago doubled their lead early in the second. Defenseman Dominik Badinka crashed the net and buried a rebound in the crease, making it 2-0 and putting the Eagles in a deeper hole.

But Colorado didn’t blink. Jayson Megna - the team’s leading scorer - picked a defender’s pocket at center ice and turned it into a breakaway goal, his 21st of the season. That sparked some life into the home side.

T.J. Tynan followed with a highlight-reel equalizer, batting a rebound out of midair in tight to knot things at 2-2 late in the second. Then, just 2:29 later, Alex Barre-Boulet capped a 2-on-1 rush with a low snipe from the left-wing circle, flipping the game on its head and giving Colorado a 3-2 lead heading into the third.

But the Wolves weren’t done.

A double-minor on Valtteri Puustinen gave Chicago a four-minute power play early in the third, and they made it count. After a failed Eagles clear, defenseman Domenick Fensore stepped into a wrister from the blue line and tied the game at 3-3.

Midway through the final frame, Nikita Pavlychev restored the Wolves’ lead with a low-slot finish through Posch’s pads, making it 4-3 Chicago.

Still, the Eagles had one more push in them. Tye Felhaber parked himself between the circles and redirected a centering feed into the net, evening things at 4-4 with just over five minutes left in regulation.

That set the stage for Unger Sorum’s overtime heroics.

Less than a minute into the extra session, he drove hard down the left wing, cut in, and snapped a wrister past Posch to seal the win - his second of the night, and a dagger for the Eagles.

Cayden Primeau was a difference-maker for the Wolves, stopping 39 of 43 shots and holding firm during some heavy stretches of Colorado pressure. Chicago also won the special teams battle in a big way, going 2-for-3 on the power play and killing off all four of the Eagles’ chances with the man advantage.

Despite the loss, Colorado showed plenty of fight - and they’ll get a quick shot at revenge. The two teams meet again Saturday night at Blue Arena.

Puck drop is set for 7:05 p.m. MT.
