The Calgary Flames are diving headfirst into a rebuild, and their recent moves make that crystal clear. Over the past couple of months, they've traded away key players like Rasmus Andersson, MacKenzie Weegar, and Nazem Kadri. In return, they've brought in Zach Whitecloud, Olli Maatta, and Victor Olofsson, but the real focus here is on stockpiling draft picks and prospects.
It's evident that the Flames are playing the long game, and GM Craig Conroy has been strategic in keeping cap space available, allowing for flexibility in their trades. This approach has enabled them to take on contracts like Ryan Strome's from the Anaheim Ducks, acquired for a seventh-round pick, without much hassle.
Looking at the contracts, only Olofsson is set to become a UFA at the end of the 2025-26 season. Whitecloud and Maatta have two more years, while Strome has one.
Many expect the Flames to let the 30-year-old Olofsson walk, opening up a spot for a younger player. However, a short-term extension might not be off the table.
Olofsson's Potential Impact
Before his trade from the Avalanche, Olofsson tallied 10 goals and 25 points in 60 games. His limited ice time, just 13:20 per game, was a factor in those numbers. The Avalanche's stacked lineup made it tough for him to shine, but his previous performances suggest he can be a valuable asset.
During the 2024-25 season with the Golden Knights, Olofsson averaged 14:30 on the ice, scoring 15 goals and 29 points in 54 games. That projects to a 20-goal pace over a full season. His stint with the Buffalo Sabres saw him hit the 20-goal mark three times, including a standout 28-goal season in 2022-23.
A New Opportunity with the Flames
Given the chance, Olofsson has shown he can deliver offensively. With the Flames, he could finally secure the top-six minutes that have been elusive on deeper teams like the Avalanche and Golden Knights.
With Kadri gone, the Flames' offense is struggling. Mikael Backlund leads the team with just 36 points in 64 games, and they risk not having a single player hit the 50-point mark. While injecting youth into the lineup is important, having reliable scorers is crucial too.
Olofsson's current market value suggests he might sign another one-year deal this summer. The Flames could capitalize on this, offering him significant playing time and a chance to boost his stats. If he performs well, they could potentially trade him for more assets at next season's deadline.
