Cale Makar Shares Personal Update After Brief Avalanche Absence

Cale Makar discusses the joys of fatherhood and his future with the Avalanche amid setting historic NHL contract records.

Cale Makar is back with the Colorado Avalanche after a brief absence for a family matter, and the reason was a big one: he stayed home in Colorado while his wife, Tracy, gave birth to twin boys.

Makar missed the Oct. 13 game against the Dallas Stars in Texas, but the Avalanche still came away with a 3-2 win without him. The next night, back at Ball Arena, he returned to the lineup and Colorado fell 3-2.

Afterward, Makar spoke about becoming a father and said everyone is healthy.

"It's been fun. Everybody's been doing well.

It's a cool experience going through all of that," Makar said per DNVR Avalanche. "[My] wife is an absolute champ.

I'm glad I was able to be there and be a part of it."

The twins have been reported by the Denver Post as Mattie and Rhett.

On the ice, Colorado leaned on other stars while Makar was away. Martin Necas paced the Avalanche with two goals in Tuesday’s game, and Nathan MacKinnon added two assists.

Makar logged 28 shifts and 22:54 of ice time in his first game back after the birth of his sons.

The timing of the moment also adds another layer to Makar’s future in Colorado. The 27-year-old has already made clear he expects to spend the rest of his career with the Avalanche, and this past offseason he signed an eight-year, $163.2 million contract that begins next season and carries a $20.4 million average annual value.

"I feel like now it's starting to sink in," Makar said previously of what his deal means in terms of the longevity of his career. "I think when you're going through the process, you don't really know what's going to happen. My intention was always to be an Av, hopefully for life, and I think this is a major step towards that."

That contract made him the first player in NHL history with an AAV above $20 million and gave him the richest deal in the league.

Makar is also on track to reach 400 career assists before the season ends.

Colorado’s next game comes against the Pittsburgh Penguins on Oct. 16, with puck drop set for 8:00 p.m. Central. The Avalanche enter that matchup with nine points in the Central Division and a 4-2-1 record.

Hakstols Sudden Avalanche Exit Raises An Obvious Timing Question

Dave Hakstols sudden departure from the Avalanche staff came soon after Jared Bednar signed a four-year contract extension, giving the move a natural layer of intrigue even before the explanation surfaced. Hakstol has already moved on to take the head coaching job at Arizona State, stepping into a program that is dealing with its own significant challenges after a recent player health incident.

For Colorado, the timing is what stands out most because it invites questions about how much of this was about opportunity and how much was about the way the coaching picture had just shifted in Denver. There has been speculation about the reasons behind Hakstols exit, but nothing has been confirmed, leaving the Avalanche with a notable change on the bench and one obvious thread still hanging. Brent Burns Is Still Chasing The One Prize Colorado Wants Most

Brent Burns has become one of the steadier veteran pieces on Colorados blue line, bringing 23 NHL seasons of experience and a rare durability that still stands out in todays game. After signing a one-year extension in June, he settled in as a dependable presence for the Avalanche, adding depth and offering the kind of edge that only comes from having seen just about everything over the course of a long career.

Burns also kept producing at the offensive end, finishing the 2025-26 season with 12 goals and 23 assists while extending his place in NHL history with the second-longest consecutive games played streak at 1,012. For a team still chasing the Stanley Cup, his value goes beyond the numbers. Colorado gets a veteran who can log minutes, provide stability and keep pushing toward the one prize that continues to define the season. [Read more 🡒]

Avalanche Bring Back A Familiar Face For Bednars Staff

The Avalanche have added a familiar name behind the bench, hiring Brett McLean as an assistant coach to fill the vacancy created when Dave Hakstol left for the head coaching job at Arizona State University. McLean, who once played for Colorado, brings a blend of franchise familiarity and coaching experience to Jared Bednars staff as the team continues shaping its support structure for the seasons ahead.

Joe Sakic praised McLeans character and work ethic, while McLean said he was excited to be back with the organization. For a team that values continuity and trust in its coaching room, the move fits neatly with Colorados approach, even as it quietly signals another shift in the makeup of Bednars bench. [Read more 🡒]
