Avalanche Stars Turned This Into A Statement Against St. Louis Early

Even with an early barrage from Cale Makar and Martin Necas, the Avalanche dominated the ice against the Blues with a commanding show of firepower.

The Avalanche wasted no time turning Saturday night into a statement start in Denver.

After a slow opening stretch, Colorado settled in, took control and buried two early chances to build a 2-0 lead over the Blues before the first intermission. Cale Makar and Martin Necas did the damage in the opening period, and the Avalanche never let St. Louis breathe.

The game opened with a brief lull, as three icing calls arrived in the first 36 seconds. Once Colorado found its rhythm, the chances came fast. Jaden Schwartz had one of the better looks early on, but Jordan Binnington stretched out across the crease and flashed the splits to keep it out.

Makar broke through at 4:10 of the first for his first goal of the season. Nathan MacKinnon fed Necas in the low slot, Necas moved in on Binnington and slipped the puck across to Makar at the doorstep. Binnington lunged with a diving effort, but he was too late getting over as Makar finished for a 1-0 lead.

St. Louis nearly answered around the eight-minute mark when Dalibor Dvorsky found Jonatan Berggren in the slot for a dangerous chance. The left side of the net was open, but Makar got a stick on Berggren and tied him up before the shot could get away.

Colorado then went to its first power play after Zach Dean was called for slashing T.J. Hughes, but the Avalanche couldn’t cash in despite coming into the night 4-for-5 on the man advantage on opening night.

The second period brought more of the same from Colorado, and Josh Manson made it 3-0 at 5:38 with a one-timer off a feed from Nic Roy at the point. The puck deflected off Binnington’s stick and into the net.

Roy then headed to the box for slashing on the next sequence, giving the Blues their first crack on the power play, but Colorado’s penalty kill handled it. By the halfway point of the period, the Avalanche were outshooting St. Louis 17-9.

Nicolas Roy pushed the lead to 5-0 with 1:58 left in the period, ripping a wrist shot past Binnington. Then came another costly mistake from the Blues goalie, who tried to play the puck behind the net again and left the crease exposed. MacKinnon beat him to it and fed Necas in the low slot for a simple finish and a six-goal cushion.

Artturi Lehkonen Is Giving The Avalanche A Tough Decision Fast

Artturi Lehkonen has wasted no time making his presence felt for Colorado, opening the NHL season with three goals in two games for the best two-game start of his career. It is the kind of early surge that fits his reputation, because coaches and teammates have long pointed to his work ethic, competitiveness and reliable style as the reasons he keeps showing up in key moments for the Avalanche.

The timing, though, adds another layer for Colorado to sort through. Lehkonen is in the final year of his current contract and still does not have a new deal in place, which means the Avalanche are already getting a reminder of how valuable he can be while facing an increasingly tough decision about what comes next. When a player who has built his value on consistency starts scoring this quickly, the conversation tends to move beyond the box score. [Read more 🡒]

Avalanche Bring Early Firepower Into First Showdown With The Blues

The Avalanche wasted no time showing what their offense can look like this season, putting up eight goals in their opener against the Kings and setting a franchise mark for scoring in a season opener. Nathan MacKinnon and Artturi Lehkonen each scored twice, and that kind of balance is exactly what Colorado wants to carry into a long season where the Central Division offers little room for slow starts.

St. Louis arrives in Denver with a different kind of opening statement after blanking the Stars 4-0 behind Joel Hofers 25-save shutout. The Blues and Avalanche are set to meet four times this season, beginning at Ball Arena, and the contrast in their first games adds a little extra bite to a series both sides will be watching closely from the start. Avalanche Fans Got An Early Look At A Goalie Worth Watching

The Avalanche organization got an encouraging glimpse of a new netminder Friday night, as Colorado Eagles goaltender Ilya Nabokov opened his AHL career with a 32-save shutout in a 2-0 win over the Tucson Roadrunners. It was the kind of debut that can turn heads quickly, especially for a player arriving with the kind of watchful interest that follows a goalie who is expected to matter down the line.

Nikita Prishchepov and Jake Wise supplied the offense, while Gustav Stjernberg and Yanick Turcotte picked up assists in a game where the Eagles did enough at both ends to stay in control. Colorado came up empty on four power-play chances, but the penalty kill was perfect, and Nabokovs calm night in net was the biggest reason the result never drifted. [Read more 🡒]
