The Colorado Avalanche have made a strategic move by signing free agent defenseman Gustav Stjernberg to a two-year, entry-level contract set to begin next season. In the meantime, Stjernberg will make his North American pro debut with the AHL's Colorado team, wrapping up this season on a minor-league deal.
Standing at 6’4″ and weighing 209 pounds, Stjernberg, 23, brings a commanding presence to the ice. Over his three years with Bowling Green, he established himself as a consistent and physical force. His collegiate career stats include a 14-23-27 scoring line, 173 penalty minutes, and a +13 rating across 86 games, showcasing his ability to contribute both offensively and defensively.
Stjernberg's familiarity with North American hockey is a notable advantage. After not being drafted from Sweden’s junior league in 2021, he spent another year developing at home.
His performance caught attention, leading to his pro debut with Örebro HK in the Swedish Hockey League before he transitioned to the US. He played the 2022-23 season with the Des Moines Buccaneers in the USHL and then joined Bowling Green as a freshman in 2023.
While players with Stjernberg’s production profile often face challenges making it big in the NHL, the Avalanche have a track record of success in transforming college free agents into valuable team assets. A prime example is Sam Malinski, who was signed out of Cornell in 2023 and has since become a reliable bottom-pairing defenseman for Colorado, enjoying a standout 2025-26 season.
With the AHL defensive lineup looking a bit thin due to upcoming free agents like Jack Ahcan, Ronald Attard, and Jacob MacDonald, Stjernberg has a solid chance to secure a regular role next season. However, if the Avalanche bolster their roster further, he might see some time in the ECHL. This signing reflects Colorado's ongoing strategy to cultivate talent and depth within their defensive ranks.
