The Colorado Avalanche head into Dallas on Monday night without Cale Makar, but they still bring the league’s most dangerous offense into a Central Division matchup that already feels like a tone-setter for this home-and-home set.
Puck drop is set for 6:45 p.m. MT, with the game airing nationally on ESPN. The Avs and Stars will play again in Denver on Tuesday night, then meet twice more in January as part of a four-game season series.
Makar is out because he returned to Denver to be with his wife, Tracy, who is due at any moment with twins. Noah Juulsen slides into the lineup, and Devon Toews will handle PP1 duties in Makar’s place.
Colorado enters at 3-2-0 after a start that has been all gas and plenty of goals, with the Avalanche averaging a league-leading 5.2 per game. The flip side has been the defensive numbers: Jared Bednar’s team has already allowed 17 goals since opening night, which is far from the standard Colorado usually sets.
Dallas has taken the opposite path. The Stars have kept opponents in check, giving up just eight goals in five games, but their offense has been slow to come around with only 11 goals of their own.
There’s also a familiar face factor in this one. Of the three former Avalanche forwards now with Dallas, only Mikko Rantanen will play Monday.
He’s on the top line with center Wyatt Johnston. Matt Duchene has not played this season and is out for three months, while Joel Kiviranta is missing his third straight game with a lower-body injury.
Kiviranta is likely to return for Wednesday’s rematch in Denver.
The goaltending matchup adds another layer. Mackenzie Blackwood gets the nod for Colorado despite a rough opening stretch, going 2-2 in four starts with a .867 save percentage.
Bednar said Monday he wants to give Blackwood a chance to rebound, and this is the kind of assignment that can help him find it. The setup also points toward Scott Wedgewood starting in Denver on Wednesday.
Across the ice, Jake Oettinger has been sharp for Dallas, already posting two shutouts while allowing just three goals in four starts. Casey DeSmith is expected to face Wedgewood on Wednesday.
The Avalanche’s injury situation also includes Logan O’Connor, who remains out on personal leave with a TBD return.
Colorado’s projected lines have Artturi Lehkonen with Nathan MacKinnon and Martin Necas, Gabriel Landeskog with Brock Nelson and Nazem Kadri, Jaden Schwartz with Fedor Svechkov and T.J. Hughes, and Zachary L’Heureux with Nicolas Roy and Parker Kelly. The blue line groups listed are Devon Toews with Sam Malinski, Brett Kulak with Noah Juulsen, and Josh Manson with Brent Burns.
For the Stars, the confirmed starter is Oettinger.
A few milestones are within reach as well: Nazem Kadri needs two power-play goals for 100, Mackenzie Blackwood needs five games for 300, Parker Kelly needs six points for 100, Scott Wedgewood needs six wins for 100, and Nicolas Roy needs seven points for 200.
TV coverage is on ESPN, and the radio broadcast is on 92.5 FM.

Avalanche Catch A Break In Dallas But Face A Bigger Concern
The Avalanche walked into Dallas with a little extra room to breathe before puck drop, thanks to a Stars lineup that looks thinner than usual down the middle. Wyatt Johnston is unavailable because of an illness, and thats a notable absence for a team that has leaned on his reliability for a long stretch. Sam Steel has been bumped up to second center, and Dallas is even asking defenseman Kyle Capobianco to fill in as a forward, a sign the Stars are patching things together wherever they can.
Colorado still has its own issues to manage, though, and they are bigger than any short-term break in the matchup. The Avalanche are also missing Cale Makar for family reasons, and that leaves them operating with 17 skaters while trying to keep pace in a game that already has some shuffling on both benches. With injuries adding to the uncertainty for both sides, this one has turned into less of a clean matchup and more of a test of depth and adaptability. [Read more 🡒]
Avalanche Got The Response They Needed In Heated Stars Win
MacKenzie Blackwood steadied the Avalanche in a needed 3-2 win over the Stars during the NHLs Frozen Frenzy, turning aside 24 shots and helping Colorado reset the tone after its previous loss. Martin Necas delivered the offense with two goals, including the power-play winner, as the Avalanche found a way to come out on top in a game that had plenty of bite for this early stretch of the schedule.
The physical edge was part of the story, too, with Nathan MacKinnon dropping the gloves in a fight and leaving with a bloody nose that needed attention during the game, though he is expected to be fine. Colorado and Dallas are right back at it in the next game of the home-and-home, giving the Avalanche a quick chance to show whether this win was just a response or the start of something steadier. Avalanche Fast Start Suddenly Feels Fragile Against Dallas
Artturi Lehkonen gave Colorado the kind of start it wanted, scoring first in the opening period and briefly putting the Avalanche in control against Dallas. The pace was tense from there, with both goaltenders making key saves as the Stars pressed back and the game settled into the sort of early-season test that can turn on one mistake.
Dallas found that mistake before the period was over, tying things at 1-1 on a power play and taking some of the shine off Colorados opening push. Penalties and a late altercation only added to the unease, leaving the Avalanche with a good start that suddenly felt a lot less secure heading into the next stretch of the game. [Read more 🡒]
