As the NHL season reaches its climax, the Colorado Avalanche are poised to clinch the Central Division title with a victory over the Winnipeg Jets this Saturday. Sitting at 106 points with 11 games left, a regulation win would push them to 108 points, out of reach for the Dallas Stars, who trail with 97 points and only 10 games remaining.
Even if the Stars win all their remaining games, they can only reach 107 points. So, a win on Saturday would seal the deal for the Avalanche, eliminating the need for tiebreaker scenarios.
But the stakes are even higher. A regulation win would also secure the top seed in the Western Conference for the Avalanche, a position they've been eyeing for some time. The real mystery, however, lies in who they'll face in the first round of the playoffs.
Currently, the Nashville Predators hold the second wild card spot with 77 points. The LA Kings are right on their heels with 76, and the Seattle Kraken are still in the mix with 74 points. The Winnipeg Jets are technically still in the race, but their five-point deficit makes their chances slim.
The Avalanche might not know their first-round opponent until the very last game of the regular season. Yet, given their current form and position, the focus is less on who they'll face and more on maintaining their momentum and health. They're hitting their stride at just the right time, which spells trouble for the rest of the Western Conference.
