The Colorado Avalanche have added some extra insurance on defense ahead of their next two games, recalling Keaton Middleton from the AHL’s Colorado Eagles, according to a team announcement.
Middleton is not expected to suit up against the Chicago Blackhawks or the Columbus Blue Jackets, but he could stick around as Colorado’s seventh defenseman. The move comes as the Avalanche deal with a deeper hit on the blue line. Meghan Angley of Altitude reported Thursday that Josh Manson will be out for the next two months because of an ankle injury.
With Manson sidelined, veteran Noah Juulsen, whom Colorado signed this past offseason, has already stepped into the regular rotation. Given that the Avalanche are heading into a pair of road games, the extra depth makes sense if another injury pops up.
For Middleton, this is a familiar spot. The 28-year-old Edmonton, AB, native has been in the Avalanche organization since the 2020-21 season after spending a few years with the AHL’s San Jose Barracuda. Since arriving from San Jose, he has mostly played for the Eagles, where he has 15 goals and 74 points in 308 games with a +46 rating.
He has also had brief NHL looks with Colorado in the 2020-21 and 2025-26 seasons, but his biggest opportunity came in 2024-25. That season gave Middleton the most NHL action of his career, though it came during a brutal year for the Avalanche.
Colorado was hit so hard by injuries that it used 43 different players and six different goaltenders over the course of the season. Middleton closed that year with two assists in 41 games, a net-zero rating, and 11:29 of ice time per game.

Avalanche Have A Gavin Brindley Problem Fans Can See Coming
Gavin Brindleys latest stint with the Avalanche was short, but it said a lot about where things stand for the young forward. Recalled from the AHLs Eagles, he got into one game and logged 12 minutes before being sent back down, a reminder that Colorados roster is already crowded and the path to a steady NHL job is not exactly wide open right now.
The Avalanche do have plans for Brindley, and there is clearly a belief he can be part of the picture. For the moment, though, his situation looks like a familiar shuttle between Colorado and the AHL, with a more permanent role likely tied to injuries or other roster changes down the line. Peter Forsberg Left Avalanche Fans With One Massive What If
Peter Forsberg remains one of the great reminders of how much talent can be packed into a career that never quite got to unfold cleanly. In 708 NHL games, he helped deliver two Stanley Cups to Colorado and collected the Hart, Art Ross and Calder Trophies, all while giving the Avalanche a blend of scoring touch and physical edge that few players could match.
What makes him linger in the memory, though, is how often injuries interrupted the run. Spleen surgery cost him an entire season, yet he still led playoff scoring in 2002 and then stacked up major honors in the 2002-03 season before the wear and tear kept taking more of his time away. For Avalanche fans, Forsberg is still the franchise's most tantalizing what if, a star whose best stretches were brilliant enough to make the missed ones sting even more. [Read more 🡒]
Avalanche Finally Got The Kind Of Win They Desperately Needed
After a rough stretch that had left little margin for error, the Avalanche got the kind of complete performance they had been searching for at Ball Arena, beating the Flames 5-2 and looking far more like themselves in the process. Cale Makar drove the offense with four assists, Artturi Lehkonen scored twice, and Nathan MacKinnon and Martin Necas also found the net as Colorado put together a night that had both pace and purpose.
Mackenzie Blackwood helped make it stand up with 25 saves, giving the Avalanche the steadier backstop they needed while the skaters did their part at the other end. For a team trying to reset its tone, this was the sort of win that can matter beyond the standings, especially with the schedule offering little time to dwell on anything for long. [Read more 🡒]
