Steven Kwan Stuns Fans With New Role in Guardians Lineup Shift

Guardians explore Steven Kwan's potential shift to center field, aiming to strengthen their outfield strategy for 2026.

Steven Kwan’s Journey: From Left Field Mastery to Center Field Experiment

Back in April 2022, Steven Kwan burst onto the big league scene with a memorable debut, going 5-for-5 against the Royals. His impressive start made him the first player since 1901 to reach base 12 times in his first three career games. Fast forward nearly four years, and Kwan has cemented his reputation as a defensive wizard in left field, snagging the American League Gold Glove in each of his four seasons.

But now, the Guardians are contemplating a shift that could redefine their outfield dynamics. Manager Stephen Vogt recently revealed that Kwan will get some reps in center field during spring training, as the team explores whether he could be a viable option there for the 2026 season.

The decision to test Kwan in center isn't made lightly. Although he's only played eight major league games at the position, his 152 minor league games in center field demonstrate his capability. Vogt emphasized that while nothing is set in stone, the move reflects the Guardians' pressing need to optimize their outfield setup.

The potential benefits of Kwan’s move to center are significant. It would allow the Guardians to field more of their bat-first outfield talents simultaneously.

Players like CJ Kayfus and George Valera, who are primarily corner outfielders, could see increased playing time. This adjustment could lead to a dynamic outfield trio of Kwan, one of the corner outfielders, and Chase DeLauter.

DeLauter, who played center during last year's postseason, has mostly been positioned in right field throughout his minor league career. If he can stay healthy and develop into an everyday player, Kwan’s flexibility in center could be key.

The Guardians’ current center field options include Nolan Jones, who faces high expectations, Angel Martínez, better suited for the infield, and non-roster invitee Stuart Fairchild. Kwan’s potential shift to center would immediately make him the top choice, highlighting both his defensive prowess and the urgency of the Guardians' outfield situation.

With a month to evaluate, the Guardians are weighing whether Kwan’s transition to center field is the right move for the upcoming season. This decision could shape the team's defensive strategy and lineup flexibility for 2026.
