The Cleveland Guardians have hit a rough patch at exactly the wrong time, but Stephen Vogt isn’t sounding the alarm.
After Friday’s loss snapped the team’s seven-game winning streak, the Guardians were handled again on Saturday, falling 8-3 to the Kansas City Royals. Cleveland now has Parker Messick lined up for Sunday as it tries to avoid a sweep.
Vogt kept his message simple after the game and made it clear he isn’t interested in panic. Kansas City has been rolling, winning 12 of its last 13, and he pointed to that surge while urging patience.
“There’s a lot of time left. They’re a really good team,” Vogt said.
The bigger picture is tightening around Cleveland, too. The Chicago White Sox have won four straight, which has dropped the Guardians to 4.5 games back in the AL Central. Their edge for the third Wild Card spot has also shrunk to one game over the Baltimore Orioles.
That kind of pressure has been hanging over Cleveland for most of the season, thanks to the inconsistency that’s followed the club all year. The offense, rotation and bullpen have rarely lined up for long, and now the Guardians are moving into a tougher stretch after getting through an easier run of games.
If they want to stay in the October picture, they’ll need more than a good week here and there. They have to keep this latest skid from turning into something bigger.
For now, Vogt is giving them the steady hand they need. Two losses don’t break a season, but Cleveland can’t afford to let this one spiral.
