Slade Cecconi’s journey with the Cleveland Guardians has been a rollercoaster, but one that’s showing promising signs for 2026. After joining the team in the trade for Josh Naylor, Cecconi faced a rocky start due to a left oblique strain, delaying his debut until mid-May.
However, once he stepped onto the field, he quickly made his presence felt. In his first game against the Reds, he delivered five solid innings and maintained a 3.64 ERA across his initial four starts.
By the end of the season, Cecconi had logged a 4.30 ERA over 132 innings, mainly serving as the Guardians’ No. 3 or 4 starter. While those numbers might not scream dominance, they underscore Cecconi’s reliability to consistently take the mound and deliver 5+ innings per outing.
As we look ahead to 2026, Cecconi’s spring performances suggest he’s poised for a breakout year. In a recent outing against the Brewers, he dazzled with four scoreless innings, allowing just one hit, striking out six, and walking one. To put that in perspective, last season he only managed 6+ strikeouts in eight of his 23 starts, but he’s already hit that mark in four spring starts.
The secret to Cecconi’s spring success? A revamped slider and a more frequently used cutter. Last year, he barely used his cutter, but against the Brewers, it accounted for 34% of his pitches and generated four swings and misses.
Spring stats are notoriously tricky to gauge, but Cecconi’s adjustments indicate he’s ready to deploy his pitching arsenal in new, effective ways. He focused his offseason on refining existing pitches rather than learning new ones, a strategy that’s paying dividends.
Last season, Cecconi showed flashes of brilliance, including two starts where he reached the eighth inning and a standout September game with seven shutout innings as the Guardians chased the AL Central title.
With Tanner Bibee and Gavin Williams locked into the top rotation spots, the remaining slots are up for grabs. Joey Cantillo has made a strong case for one, and Cecconi is right there with him, matching performance for performance.
Cecconi’s evolution as a pitcher is evident. He’s taken the lessons from last year and honed his skills over the offseason, setting the stage for what could be a standout 2026 season with the Guardians.
