The Cleveland Guardians have been under the microscope this offseason for not making major moves to enhance their lineup. Yet, they did make strategic additions to their bullpen, and one returning face is particularly pleased with this decision. Shawn Armstrong is back with the Guardians, more than a decade after his MLB debut with the team.
Armstrong shared insights into his decision to return, emphasizing Cleveland's reputation for nurturing pitching talent. “When I was exploring free agency, Cleveland was a top choice for me.
Their track record in pitching development is outstanding. The bullpen here is exceptional, and being familiar with the front office and coaching staff, like pitching coach Carl Willis, played a huge role in my decision to return to my roots,” Armstrong explained.
Drafted by Cleveland in the 18th round of the 2011 MLB Draft, Armstrong made his debut in 2015. Over three seasons, he pitched in 39 games with a 3.53 ERA, all in relief roles.
His journey took him through several teams, including the Mariners, Orioles, Rays, Cardinals, and Cubs. Last season with the Rangers was a standout, as he posted a 2.71 ERA over 71 appearances, including two starts as an opener.
His 0.81 WHIP was second-best in the majors, and his .157 batting average against ranked third among pitchers with at least 50 innings.
Now at 35, Armstrong has inked a one-year deal worth $5.5 million, with an option for 2027. The Guardians also bolstered their bullpen by signing relievers Connor Brogdon and Colin Holderman to one-year contracts.
They’ll join forces with top setup man Hunter Gaddis and closer Cade Smith. Smith rose to prominence last season after Emmanuel Clase was sidelined due to an MLB gambling investigation.
With the Guardians boasting the second-best bullpen ERA last season at 3.44, just behind the Red Sox, Armstrong’s return could be the catalyst for Cleveland to claim the top spot. If he can replicate last season’s performance, the Guardians' bullpen could become the league's benchmark.
