The Guardians got the kind of night from Petey Halpin that can stick around long after the box score fades.
In Cleveland’s 6-3 win over the Chicago White Sox, the rookie outfielder erased an early mistake in dramatic fashion, launching a go-ahead three-run homer in the sixth inning. It was his fourth major league home run, and it helped push the Guardians back into sole possession of first place for the first time since July 3.

Halpin’s season has been a stop-and-start one, with time spent bouncing between Cleveland and Triple-A Columbus as injuries opened and closed opportunities in the outfield. He was in the lineup Wednesday because Chase DeLauter and Angel Martinez were sidelined.
A third-round pick in the 2020 MLB Draft out of high school, Halpin has climbed through Cleveland’s minor league system and made his MLB debut last season. This year, his role has grown.
The numbers aren’t eye-popping - nine extra-base hits, 10 stolen bases, and a .217/.256/.325 slash line in 74 appearances - but manager Stephen Vogt has still described him as an important part of the team and a valuable locker room presence.
For a Guardians club trying to hold off the rest of the division, that kind of fearless, timely contribution can mean plenty.
