By summer, he had forced his way onto the American League All-Star team, and he and Travis Bazzana became the first rookie duo in franchise history to be selected.
Messick’s climb has moved quickly, but it has been built step by step. He was the 2021 ACC Pitcher of the Year at Florida State, then went 54th overall to Cleveland in the 2022 draft.
He debuted in the majors on Aug. 20, 2025, made a handful of appearances later that season, and opened this year in the rotation. Less than two years after that debut, he’s now a division champion and a major reason the Guardians are headed into October with a first-round bye.
There won’t be much time to savor it. Messick is set to start Sunday’s regular season finale against the Royals, and then Cleveland turns to the American League Division Series. The Guardians will open that series on Oct. 3 at Progressive Field, with the 25-year-old left-hander likely to be central to whatever comes next.
