Just a few days ago, Cleveland Guardians fans were a bit concerned about Kyle Manzardo's performance in spring training. The first baseman had been struggling, with a batting average sitting at .122 and a wRC+ of -6 over 44 plate appearances. But remember, spring training stats can be deceiving due to the small sample size.
Fast forward to now, and Manzardo has turned things around in style. He’s launched two home runs and driven in four runs since then, boosting his wRC+ to 43. While it’s not where he’d like it to be, it’s a significant improvement.
On Sunday, Manzardo went 1-for-3, adding another homer to his tally, making it three for the spring. He’s also racked up 11 RBIs, tying him with Travis Bazzana and just one behind team leader Jose Ramirez.
Guardians manager Stephen Vogt had high praise for Manzardo after the game, noting his well-rounded performance. Vogt highlighted Manzardo's ability to hit to all fields and his impressive approach with two strikes.
“Manzo is peaking at the right time,” Vogt said, emphasizing that spring is more about refining skills than results. Vogt’s confidence in Manzardo’s approach and swing is clear.
Manzardo is showing signs of being a complete hitter, something that could elevate him to All-Star status if he continues to progress. Last season, he posted a solid .234/.313/.455 slash line with 27 homers, 19 doubles, and two triples, good for a 113 wRC+. His impressive 144 wRC+ in Triple-A back in 2024, along with a .398 OBP and 20 home runs in just 364 plate appearances, suggests he hasn’t reached his full potential yet.
At just 25, Manzardo’s best years are likely still ahead. If he continues to develop, the Guardians could see their offense reach new heights. Keep an eye on this young talent-he’s on the verge of something special.
