The Guardians’ Nolan Jones trade has aged a little differently after the Rockies moved on from Tyler Freeman.
Cleveland shipped Jones to Colorado last spring in exchange for Freeman, a deal that looked like the kind of swap teams hope will pay off quickly. Instead, the Rockies have now outrighted Freeman off their roster and sent him to Triple-A Albuquerque, a development that gives the Guardians at least a small bit of trade vindication.
Freeman’s time in Colorado never really took off. He hit .247 in 79 games this season and finished with a .267 batting average across 189 games in his two years with the Rockies. There were moments when he flashed enough to keep things interesting, but not enough to lock down a lasting role.
The context around the deal matters, too. Colorado made the move under different management, and the organization has since changed direction. Freeman, meanwhile, is once again on the outside looking in.
He has been in this spot before. He flashed at times in Cleveland as well, including that fantastic catch against the Twins, but he always seemed to be fighting uphill for playing time. The Guardians also asked him to learn the outfield on the fly, which only added to the challenge.
His best statistical season came in 2024, when he hit .209 and was worth 0.9 bWAR. Cleveland then used that year to sell high in the trade for Jones. Freeman was better at the plate last year, but he was still worth -13 Outs Above Average, and that defensive number carried into Colorado, where he posted -8 OAA this season before being outrighted.
That roster move makes a non-tender after the season feel almost inevitable. Freeman will likely be looking at a minor league deal this winter, and while he still has enough talent to help a big league club, his road back just got much steeper.
