CLEVELAND, Ohio - The Cleveland Guardians are set to celebrate a remarkable milestone as they host the Cubs for their home opener at Progressive Field. This Friday marks the 125th year of Cleveland baseball, with festivities kicking off at 3:30 p.m. before the first pitch at 4:10 p.m.
This season's theme, “Unforgettable Moments,” pays homage to the trailblazers, championship triumphs, and the generations of fans who have been the heartbeat of this storied franchise.
Adding a touch of gold to the ceremony, Olympic champion Laila Edwards will throw the ceremonial first pitch. Edwards, a Cleveland Heights native, made waves at the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Games as the first Black woman to join the U.S.
Olympic hockey team. Her impressive performance included two goals and six assists, with a crucial assist in the gold-medal match.
Edwards' roots trace back to Cleveland, where she honed her skills with local youth teams.
The musical backdrop for the day will be provided by Akron's own Jon Lampley. Known for his performances with O.A.R and as a regular on Stephen Colbert’s Late Night band, Lampley will deliver renditions of the national anthem, “God Bless America,” and “Take Me Out To The Ballgame.” His recent single, “Greener,” adds to his growing repertoire.
The ceremony will feature a patriotic display with military members presenting the colors, followed by a thrilling flyover of four F-16 jets from Toledo's 180th Fighter Wing. KeyBank employees will unfurl an American flag across the outfield during the anthem.
Highlighting the Guardians' community spirit, six long-time season ticket holders will participate in raising the AL Central Champions flag. The pregame atmosphere will be buzzing with DJ Nick Duvé spinning tunes in the Right Field District, while face painters, glitter tattoo artists, and airbrush artists add to the festivities on Gateway Plaza.
Nancy Sherwin, a dedicated season ticket member, will have the honor of delivering the game ball, and a young Cleveland Clinic patient will take on the role of Play Ball Kid.
Fans are advised to plan for extra travel time due to anticipated traffic, ensuring everyone can fully enjoy this historic celebration.
