The Guardians have a real decision brewing with Angel Genao, and it’s the kind of problem every organization wants.
Genao is 22, a switch-hitting shortstop prospect in Columbus with the club’s Triple-A team, and his production has put him squarely on the doorstep of the majors. In 61 games, he has posted a 130 wRC+, a .303/.391/.469 slash line, 6 stolen bases, and a 14.1/12.5 K/BB%.
He has also split his time around the infield, logging 44 games at shortstop, 10 at third base, and 6 at second base. And yes, his name is Angel Genao, not Genoa.
The offensive résumé is already loud enough to stand out among recent Triple-A shortstop seasons for players 22 and under. Since 2017, only a handful of names have posted better numbers at the level: JJ Wetherholt at 164 wRC+, Elly De La Cruz at 151, Wander Franco at 151, Gunnar Henderson at 140, and Genao right there at 131.
There are still a few things that keep the profile from being clean and simple. Genao is putting too many balls on the ground, with a 55% groundball rate.
But he’s also doing damage when he connects, with a 90 mph average exit velocity and a 45% hard-hit rate. He’s pulling the ball effectively at 50%, which gives him a path to make the bat-to-ball quality work if he can trim even 5-10% of those grounders into line drives and fly balls.
That’s why the Guardians’ infield picture could get interesting fast. One possibility is bringing Genao up to play second base while moving Travis Bazzana to DH for the moment, then shifting Bazzana to second and Genao to third when Jose DH’s. Bazzana’s long-term defensive home may be left field or second base, but his work at second is a negative right now.
There’s also the trade angle. Genao could be the kind of prospect who gets included in a deal for a right-handed slugger or a starting pitcher. But with his age and production, that would be a risky move for Cleveland.
If the Guardians decide to keep him, they could even look at Genao in center field if they believe Bazzana can handle second. However it shakes out, the organization has a lot to sort through - and a strong case for getting another Guardian Angel into the lineup soon.
