Guardians Stun Fans With Bold Move Involving Former Top Prospect

Guardians trade Carter Kieboom to the Phillies after a challenging spring training, aiming for a fresh start in his MLB journey.

Carter Kieboom's journey through the MLB has been a roller coaster, and it just took another turn. After being outrighted by the Los Angeles Angels last October, Kieboom opted for free agency. The Cleveland Guardians saw potential in him, signing him to a minor league deal in January with hopes of reigniting his career.

Kieboom's performance in Triple-A was promising, boasting a .319/.368/.449 slash line, along with nine homers and 11 stolen bases over 93 games. This post-hype potential was enough for Cleveland to take a chance on him.

However, his spring training stint with the Guardians didn't go as planned. With a .160 average, one homer, and five RBIs in 16 games, Kieboom struggled to secure a spot on the roster.

The Guardians decided to trade Kieboom to the Philadelphia Phillies for cash considerations. He'll now report to the Phillies' minor league camp, hoping for a fresh start. The move comes as both teams are in the final stages of shaping their rosters for the upcoming season.

Kieboom's story began with high expectations when the Washington Nationals drafted him in the first round in 2016. The hope was for him to join a star-studded lineup featuring Bryce Harper and Juan Soto. Yet, baseball's unpredictability played its part, and Kieboom's career hasn't matched those early hopes, reflected in his career 64 wRC+ and -2.1 fWAR.

Baseball is filled with tales of prospects who either burst onto the scene or take time to develop. Kieboom's journey has been challenging, but the Phillies offer another chapter and another opportunity. Meanwhile, Cleveland gains some financial flexibility as they and the rest of the league prepare for the season's first pitch.
