The Guardians have made it official: Peyton Pallette, their Rule 5 draft pick, is heading to the Opening Day roster. The rookie right-hander shared the exciting news with the Cleveland media, and it's a decision that's hard to argue with given his standout performance in camp.
Pallette has been nothing short of impressive, tossing six scoreless innings while allowing just three hits and three walks, alongside an eye-catching 11 strikeouts. His fastball has been a revelation, clocking in at an average of 97 mph-two ticks faster than last year in the minors. With a 15% swinging strike rate, he's made a strong case for himself as a reliever to watch.
Though it's a small sample size, Pallette's impact during Spring Training has been undeniable. The Guardians snagged him from the White Sox in December’s Rule 5 draft.
Originally drafted in the second round in 2022, Pallette was coming off Tommy John surgery. Initially, his fastball wasn't as sharp, prompting the Sox to transition him to a full-time relief role last season.
Splitting his time between the top two minor league levels, Pallette posted a 4.06 ERA over 64 1/3 innings, striking out an impressive 32.5% of batters. However, his command was a bit of a concern with a 10.6% walk rate, leading the Chicago front office to leave him off their 40-man roster. Interestingly, the Sox made two Rule 5 picks themselves, recently returning one, Alexander Alberto, to the Rays.
For the Guardians, keeping Pallette on the MLB roster-or on the injured list-is crucial to retaining his rights. At 24, Pallette has some work ahead to cement his place, but his stellar camp performance has certainly opened the door to his first MLB opportunity.
