The Guardians didn’t get much help from their own side last night, but the standings still handed them a lifeline.
Joey Cantillo had a rough outing, Dylan Cease kept building his Cy Young case and Austin Hedges took the mound for the ninth inning in what turned into an 11-0 loss. Not exactly the kind of night a team wants in the middle of a postseason push.
Even so, Cleveland is still only three games back of the White Sox in the American League Central, because Chicago fell 2-0 to the Astros.
That leaves the Guardians in a familiar spot: close enough to matter, but with no room for wasted chances. Every Cleveland loss on a day when Chicago also loses is a missed chance to trim the gap, and the next two weeks are all about staying in range before the Guardians host the White Sox for a huge three-game series beginning Sept. 14.
Chicago’s recent run has been one of the more surprising stories in the sport, but some regression always felt like it was lurking. The White Sox have lost only two straight once this season, and their longest skid has somehow been just four games.
The Guardians, meanwhile, are coming off two division titles and have been one of baseball’s better teams over the last two Septembers, even if last night didn’t look anything like that kind of club.
The loss to the Blue Jays may have hurt a little more than some of the other setbacks, since Toronto is one of three teams within two games of Cleveland for the American League’s final Wild Card spot. But it was still just one game, and the Guardians remain in control of their own fate.
Today’s matchup carries more weight, though. A Blue Jays win would give Toronto the head-to-head edge over Cleveland, and that’s the first tiebreaker used to settle a postseason race.
Toronto was also the only team to make any real progress on the Guardians yesterday. The Orioles dropped a walk-off decision to the Rockies, the Rangers were blown out by the Athletics and the White Sox took their loss to Houston.
That leaves today’s series finale as a chance for Tanner Bibee to set the tone. He was excellent late last season during Cleveland’s remarkable September run, and now he gets his first shot to carry that into this month.
If Bibee handles his end and the offense gives him some support, the Guardians will at least enter the weekend still within reach of the White Sox.
Right now, that’s the assignment.
