Guardians Star Linked to Team USA Ahead of Spring Training Kickoff

As Team USA weighs its options for the upcoming World Baseball Classic, one Guardians standout could be poised for a major international spotlight.

As Spring Training kicks off across the league, the Cleveland Guardians are settling into Goodyear, Arizona with one goal in mind: a third straight AL Central crown. Pitchers and catchers have officially reported, and the countdown to Opening Day is on. But before regular-season baseball takes center stage, there’s another event looming that’s bound to grab global attention-the World Baseball Classic.

Set to begin on March 6, the WBC is baseball’s international showcase, where pride, passion, and elite competition collide. And while several Guardians are already slated to represent their countries, one more name might be joining the mix-outfielder Steven Kwan.

According to MLB Network’s Jon Morosi, Kwan is being considered as a potential replacement for Corbin Carroll on Team USA’s WBC roster. Carroll, the Arizona Diamondbacks star, recently withdrew due to a broken bone in his hand, leaving a significant hole in the outfield. USA Baseball officials are now evaluating options, and Kwan is one of seven names reportedly under consideration.

The list includes Tyler Soderstrom, Riley Greene, Roman Anthony, James Wood, Wyatt Langford, and Kyle Stowers-each a talented player in their own right. But Kwan stands out for a few reasons.

For starters, his game mirrors Carroll’s in a lot of key ways. Both are high-contact, high-IQ outfielders with plus speed, excellent gloves, and an advanced approach at the plate. Kwan’s ability to work counts, avoid strikeouts, and play elite defense in left field makes him an ideal fit for the kind of roster Team USA typically builds-one that values versatility, baseball IQ, and situational awareness as much as raw power.

There’s no official word yet on which player has the edge, but Kwan’s résumé speaks for itself. He’s already proven he can handle the big stage, and his skill set would translate seamlessly to the high-stakes environment of the WBC. For Guardians fans, the possibility of seeing Kwan in red, white, and blue before the MLB season even begins would be a thrill-and a welcome early glimpse of postseason-caliber baseball.

And for Kwan himself? It would be a well-deserved honor and the perfect springboard into what could be another standout season.

Representing your country on the international stage is one of the game’s highest honors. If he gets the call, don’t be surprised if Kwan makes the most of it-just like he always does.
