Nick Martinez kept Cleveland quiet for six innings, Yandy Diaz crossed a major milestone, and the Tampa Bay Rays kept rolling with a 3-0 win over the Guardians on Saturday in St. Petersburg, Fla.
Martinez was in full control from the start, allowing four singles without a walk while striking out five. The right-hander improved to 10-2 and has now given up three earned runs or fewer in 19 of his 20 starts this season.
The Rays backed him with just enough offense to stretch their recent surge. Tampa Bay has now won five of its last six and picked up its seventh shutout of the year.
Diaz set the tone immediately against Tanner Bibee, lining a leadoff single to right field in the first inning for the 1,000th hit of his career with Tampa Bay. That made him the fourth player in franchise history to reach the mark with the club. Diaz, who began his career in Cleveland, finished with two hits on the day, as did Chandler Simpson.
The game stayed scoreless until the fifth, when Tampa Bay finally broke through. Diaz doubled with one out, moved to third on Jonathan Aranda’s single, and scored on Junior Caminero’s double off the right-field wall. Cedric Mullins then followed with a sacrifice fly to make it 2-0.
Tampa Bay added another run in the sixth. With runners on the corners and one out, Victor Mesa Jr. scored on Hunter Feduccia’s sacrifice bunt to push the lead to 3-0.
Bibee did what he could to keep Cleveland in it, but the Rays made him work all afternoon. He allowed three runs on nine hits over six innings, walked two and struck out five, and needed a season-high 107 pitches.
The Guardians never found a breakthrough against Martinez. Their only walk came in the eighth, when pinch-hitter David Fry drew a free pass with two outs before Steven Kwan lined out to center. Cleveland has now lost four straight and has scored just four runs over its last three games.
Cole Sulser and Garrett Cleavinger each handled a scoreless inning out of the bullpen, and Bryan Baker worked around a one-out single in the ninth to earn his 27th save.
