The Guardians’ roster has changed so much since April that even two names who once felt like part of the future now look like footnotes in the bigger picture.
Back on April 15, Cleveland dropped a 5-3 decision to the Cardinals in the final game of that series at Busch Stadium, and Juan Brito and Bo Naylor were in the middle of it. Brito, then in his first stint with the club, started at No. 6 and went 0-for-4 with two strikeouts. Naylor hit out of the No. 8 spot and finished 1-for-3 with a two-run double.
At the time, nobody knew that would be one of the last big league games they’d share together. Brito was sent down at the end of April, and Naylor followed a couple of weeks later. By the trade deadline, the Guardians had doubled down on moving on, trading both players and closing the book on two disappointing stretches in Cleveland.
Now both are getting another shot to reset elsewhere through September roster moves. Naylor is up with the Brewers, while Brito has joined the Reds.
Naylor’s return to the majors comes after a strong minor league run in which he posted a .903 OPS with four home runs, powered by a re-worked swing. Milwaukee’s trade for him always looked like a move aimed more at the future than the present, and September will give the Brewers their first real look at him at American Family Field.
Cleveland, meanwhile, has already gotten an early return in the deal through Craig Yoho’s big league performance. If Naylor puts together a strong month, that equation could look different.
Brito also got his first chance with Cincinnati last night, going 0-for-3 and adding a late sacrifice fly that helped extend the Reds’ lead in their win over the Padres.
Once viewed as a possible answer for the Guardians’ infield, Brito saw his path stall because of a string of injuries. By the time Travis Bazzana and Angel Genao moved closer to the majors, he had become the odd man out.
There’s a certain symmetry to the timing, too: Brito’s quiet Reds debut came on the same day Genao delivered his first signature moment with Cleveland.
Daniel Schneemann is the Guardians’ September addition, and even if his playing time stays limited, he fits the role perfectly because of his ability to move all over the diamond.
That his promotion barely registers says plenty about where the Guardians are right now. Not every team can absorb a move like that so casually.
And even if Naylor and Brito both finish strong over the final month, Cleveland’s current roster picture makes one thing clear: there wouldn’t have been a spot for either of them anymore.
