Guardians Prospect Is Forcing His Way Into Clevelands Infield Plans

Cleveland Guardians prospect Welbyn Francisca is making waves in the Arizona Fall League with impressive numbers and a potential MVP run.

Welbyn Francisca is making the Arizona Fall League look easy, and the Cleveland Guardians prospect has turned that stage into a full-blown showcase.

The Guardians’ No. 9 overall prospect has been one of the league’s biggest standouts, and his Thursday night line only added to the buzz: two walks, two hits and a two-run homer. That’s become familiar territory for the 20-year-old since he headed to the desert.

Francisca now leads the league with a 1.198 OPS, backed by a .420/.488/.710 slash line. He has piled up 10 extra-base hits - six doubles and four home runs - in 69 at-bats, all while keeping his strikeout rate at 20 percent.

The production has been loud enough to separate him from the pack. He has already driven in 28 runs halfway through the Fall League, a pace that hasn’t been matched since Philadelphia Phillies infielder Bryson Stott posted 31 RBI in 26 games in 2021.

That performance has landed Francisca on the Fall Stars roster for this weekend’s All-Star game, and he looks like the clear favorite to take home league MVP honors when the season wraps.

None of it has come against current big-league competition, so the numbers have to be viewed in that light. Still, Francisca has carried over the momentum from a strong 2026 minor league season.

He spent most of the year at High-A, where he hit .277/.356/.538 in 65 games, then got a late-season bump to Double-A. With the RubberDucks, he collected six hits in 20 at-bats.

Something is clearly clicking for Francisca, and his Arizona Fall League run is only strengthening the case that bigger things are coming in 2027. It shouldn’t be long before he reaches Columbus, with the Guardians’ top prospects then sitting just one step from the majors.

Guardians Could Be Closing In On A High-Upside Infield Boost

The Guardians have spent the last few seasons leaning into their ability to identify and develop young talent, a formula that helped carry them all the way to a recent ALCS appearance. Now, they may be lining up another long-term infield addition, with reports indicating Cleveland is the favorite to sign Dominican shortstop prospect John Cruz when the January 15, 2027 international signing period opens.

Cruz is being described as a high-upside target, which fits the kind of lottery ticket the Guardians have often preferred on the international market. There is still not much publicly available detail on his game, but the early buzz alone suggests Cleveland sees real potential in the teenager, even if the wait to make it official is still a long one. Two Guardians Arms Just Earned Serious October Respect

Postseason reputation can change fast, and for the Guardians, it just got a little louder. Dan Plesac recently put together his list of the top 10 pitchers based on October impact, and Cleveland landed two names on it in Cade Smith and Gavin Williams, a sign that their work in the 2026 postseason did not go unnoticed beyond the clubhouse.

Williams checked in at No. 6 after a dominant run that included a 2.16 ERA and 33 strikeouts in 16.2 innings, while Smith followed at No. 7 with a 2.38 ERA across 11.1 innings and nine appearances. For a team that leaned on both arms deep into October, the recognition only reinforces how important they were when the games tightened and every out carried extra weight. [Read more 🡒]

Guardians Suddenly Have A Real Jo Adell Decision This Winter

The Guardians are heading into an offseason where every roster choice carries some weight, and Jo Adell has become one of the more interesting names in the mix. Arbitration-eligible and projected to land around $9.6 million, the outfielder sits at the center of a decision that is as much about payroll planning as it is about fit, with Cleveland needing to sort out how aggressively it wants to keep building around its current group.

If the Guardians decide Adell is more useful as a trade chip than a retained piece, there should be no shortage of teams keeping an eye on the situation. The Blue Jays, Braves and Rays all make sense as speculative landing spots based on their needs and recent performance, which only adds to the intrigue for Cleveland as it weighs whether to hold onto him or see what kind of market develops once the winter really gets moving.
