The Guardians’ August skid has a lot of moving parts, but the middle infield has become the clearest trouble spot. Brayan Rocchio and José Ramírez, two players Cleveland needs to carry the offense, have both gone cold at the same time, and the timing couldn’t be worse.
Rocchio’s season looked very different in May. Cleveland was rolling, the roster was healthy, and he was producing like one of the best shortstops in baseball. By the end of that month, he had posted an .815 OPS with 10 RBI and 10 walks in 27 games, turning himself from an organizational afterthought into a lineup fixture.
Since then, though, the season has tilted the other way. Rocchio entered Wednesday’s game after an 0-for-4 night against the Tigers on Tuesday, and in August he was hitting just .125/.243/.125 across nine games. Stretch that back to July 25, and he was batting only .109 over his last 15 games.
That slump has landed in the middle of a Guardians offense that has gone flat across the board, helping push the team out of the postseason picture. Even if Rocchio isn’t as lost as the recent numbers suggest, the lack of production has made Cleveland’s climb back much steeper.
Ramírez’s struggles have only magnified the issue. Since coming off the injured list, he has posted a rough August line of .217/.345/.217, and since July 25 he has hit just .208.
Together, Rocchio and Ramírez have gone 16-for-103 (.155) since July 25. That kind of production from two of the lineup’s key bats makes it awfully difficult to keep up in a playoff race.
The Guardians, though, don’t have much choice but to keep running them out there. Ramírez still does not look fully recovered after fracturing his hamate earlier this season, and Rocchio has already shown he can drive in runs, putting up double-digit RBI in three of the five months he’s played this year.
Earlier in the season, Rocchio’s RBI totals were helped by teammates getting on base ahead of him. Those chances have largely disappeared now, and the results have followed.
Even so, the broader issue is bigger than lineup support. Both Rocchio and Ramírez have solid on-base numbers built on strong plate discipline, but the recent stretch has exposed the downside when the big hits aren’t there.
Eventually, both hitters should heat up again. The Guardians just need it to happen before the season slips any further away.

The Guardians have spent plenty of nights putting runners on base, only to watch the inning stall when the situation turns simplest on paper and most demanding in practice. Their offensive skid has increasingly looked less like a lack of traffic and more like a failure to turn that traffic into runs, with the club sitting near the bottom of the league in converting runners on third with fewer than two outs and runners on second with no outs.
Stephen Vogt and Chase DeLauter have both pointed to the mental side of those scoring-position spots, which fits the numbers and helps explain why the problem has lingered.
