With the MLB trade deadline set for Aug. 3, the Guardians could be in the middle of plenty of movement over the next two weeks as they sit in a tight AL playoff race. But Cleveland has already been part of a smaller transaction that could end up mattering down the road.
Outfielder Wuilfredo Antunez, once a promising name in the Guardians’ farm system, signed a two-year minor league contract with the Philadelphia Phillies.
“Though uncommon, a two-year minor league contract provides stability for both player and organization while allowing the Phillies to see whether Antunez can regain the momentum he enjoyed last season as he bats .196 this season. That (right shoulder tendinitis) injury interrupted what appeared to be some important development for the young outfielder, as he has struggled this season. If Antunez can recapture the trajectory that made him a favorite prospect in the Guardians system, he could move up the Phillies ladder before the end of next season,” Peter Chawaga of Forbes wrote.
Antunez’s 2025 season had looked like a step forward. He hit 18 home runs and put up an .856 OPS while splitting time between Single-A Lake County and Double-A Akron.
That performance earned him a trip to the Arizona Fall League, but he appeared in only two games before the shoulder problem shut him down. The issue may have lingered into this year at Akron.
In 66 games, Antunez posted a .196/.249/.396 line with 12 homers and 89 strikeouts in 260 at-bats. Cleveland released him on July 12, the same day the organization promoted outfielders Ryan Cesarini, Aaron Walton and Nolan Schubart from Lake County to Akron.
Five days later, Antunez landed with Philadelphia. He’s now at High-A Jersey Shore, where he went 3-for-10 in his first three games.
Antunez originally signed as an international free agent in 2019 and climbed through the Cleveland system far enough to earn an invitation to spring training this year. MLB.com ranked him as the Guardians’ No. 27 overall prospect in 2023, though he did not make the site’s top 30 list over the past three seasons.
Not every prospect fits cleanly into one organization, and Antunez now gets another shot to show what he can do in a new system.

The Guardians have spent much of the season looking for a right-handed bat that can deepen the lineup and make the roster less vulnerable to matchups late in games. One possible answer has emerged in the form of a trade idea with Cincinnati, where a versatile hitter with defensive value could give Cleveland a more balanced option without forcing a complete reshuffle of the roster.
The appeal is obvious, but so is the price. Any deal would likely hinge on how aggressively the Reds value their player and how willing Cleveland is to part with minor league depth to get it done, which is the kind of trade-off the front office has to weigh carefully this time of year.
