The Guardians’ recent slide has put a little more pressure on the front office as the Aug. 3 trade deadline gets closer, and one familiar name has surfaced as a possible answer.
Zack Meisel of The Athletic thinks Cleveland could circle back to Lane Thomas.
“Lane Thomas returns,” Meisel wrote. “I suppose it’s not too bold if it’s the exact same addition they made two years ago at the trade deadline. This time around, they’re hanging around in the race mostly because the AL is so weak, so a marginal upgrade at a spot of need - it seems like a reliable right-handed-hitting outfielder has been a need at the trade deadline for the last quarter-century - makes sense.”
That would be a notable twist, considering Thomas was already part of a deadline deal with the Washington Nationals before the 2024 cutoff. Cleveland sent three minor league prospects - pitcher Alex Clemmey, infielder Jose Tena and shortstop Rafael Ramirez Jr. - to get him.
The fit looked clear enough at the time. Thomas had just come off a 28-homer season in 2023, but his run in Cleveland never really got rolling.
He hit .209 with seven home runs in 54 games after the trade, then struggled even more last year, batting .160 with a .518 OPS in 39 games. His season ended after a bone bruise in his wrist and surgery for a lingering plantar fasciitis problem.
Since then, the Guardians have added more outfield options to the mix. Chase DeLauter is ready to join the MLB lineup alongside All-Star Steven Kwan, while George Valera, Angel Martinez and CJ Kayfus are all expected to keep developing. That helped push Thomas out the door, and he left as a free agent.
He landed with the Kansas City Royals on a one-year deal and has put up a .230/.327/.400 slash line with 10 home runs. For Cleveland, the appeal is pretty straightforward: the lineup leans left, and Thomas would give them a right-handed bat without forcing the club to pay the kind of price a longer-term addition might demand.
Thomas is about to turn 31 next month, and if the Guardians can steady themselves and make it to the postseason for a third straight year, he’d also bring some playoff experience back into the room.
