The Guardians had a chance to keep their recent push rolling Monday night, but the opener against the Rangers slipped away in a 6-3 loss at Progressive Field.
Cleveland entered the game riding two straight wins and three victories in its last four, yet the result left the club at 44-41 and back in second place in the AL Central. The Chicago White Sox’s win over the Baltimore Orioles pushed Cleveland one game behind.
Parker Messick gave the Guardians a strong start before the outing turned on him. The left-hander lasted 6.2 innings, struck out five, didn’t issue a walk and still took the loss after giving up four runs on eight hits.
For the first three innings, Messick, Tyler Alexander and Chris Paddack kept things tight in a lively pitching matchup. Texas got its first break in the fourth when Josh Jung opened the frame with a leadoff double, and two groundouts brought him home for the night’s first run.
Cleveland answered in the fifth and briefly grabbed control. Gabriel Arias launched a homer to center field to tie it, his third of the season, and Chase DeLauter followed with a 110.7-mph double that scored Austin Hedges and put the Guardians ahead.
That lead didn’t last. Jake Burger delivered an RBI single in the sixth, and Messick ran into more trouble in the seventh before Stephen Vogt pulled him after 83 pitches. By then, Cleveland was staring at a 4-2 deficit.
The Guardians chipped back in the bottom of the seventh. Brayan Rocchio singled, stole second and moved to third on DeLauter’s hit, then came home on a wild pitch to trim the gap again.
From there, Cleveland’s bullpen had mixed results. Colin Holderman was sharp, firing 1.1 scoreless innings without allowing a hit or walk and striking out three.
Erik Sabrowski, though, struggled in the ninth and gave up a two-run double to Justin Foscue that stretched Texas’ lead to 6-3. Steven Kwan threw out a runner at home on the previous play, then mishandled the ball and helped the runners advance.
The Guardians finished with 10 hits, including two apiece from Rocchio and DeLauter, but they went just 2-for-12 with runners in scoring position and never mounted another threat.
The teams meet again Tuesday, with Jacob deGrom and Tanner Bibee set for the next pitching matchup at Progressive Field.
