The Cleveland Guardians made a few roster moves in the middle of a tense stretch, parting ways with three minor leaguers as the regular season winds down.
The club released right-handers Carter Spivey and Wes Burton, along with infielder Kyle Dernedde, according to Guardians Prospective. The announcement came as the minor league seasons are wrapping up their postseasons and Cleveland heads into the final week of MLB’s regular season.

Spivey missed the entire 2026 season because of a shoulder injury. The soon-to-be 27-year-old had shown promise in his time with the organization, posting a 3.52 ERA across 161 innings, but Cleveland has now moved on.
Burton, who turns 26 soon, got his first taste of minor league action this year. His numbers never really settled in, as he finished with a 7.56 ERA in nine bullpen appearances between the ACL league and Hill City in A-ball. He also landed on the IL in early August and never made it back before the year ended.
Dernedde spent the year injured as well and went 0-for-2 with two strikeouts in his lone action for the Akron RubberDucks. Like Burton, he’s approaching 26, and the Guardians clearly viewed all three players as being a bit older than the usual profile for prospects at the lower levels.
Cleveland has leaned heavily on its farm system to get here, with a number of young players already helping shape the current roster. Even with more talent still on the way, moves like this are part of the churn that comes when prospects are overtaken on the depth chart.
For Spivey, Burton and Dernedde, the hope now is simple: another opportunity somewhere else in the minors.
