In a game that echoed the ups and downs of last summer, the Guardians faced a mixed bag of performances on the mound and at the plate. Gavin Williams, taking the hill, struggled with command, landing only 31% of his pitches in the strike zone according to Statcast.
Yet, there was a silver lining-Williams generated 15 whiffs, showcasing the potential of his arsenal. His sweeper, in particular, looked sharp, reflecting some offseason adjustments that have him throwing it more consistently east-west.
On the offensive side, Chase DeLauter continued his power surge, launching another home run in his first at-bat. This mirrors his impressive opening night performance. According to MLB researcher Sarah Langs, DeLauter has joined an exclusive club, becoming just the third player since at least 1900 to hit three home runs in his first two career regular season games, a feat last achieved by Trevor Story in 2016.
However, Williams' control issues eventually caught up with him, leading to a costly three-run homer by Cole Young in the fourth inning. The Guardians' struggles didn’t end there.
In the top of the fifth, they loaded the bases with one out, thanks to walks by Hoskins and Naylor, and Rocchio being hit by a pitch. Unfortunately, Kwan couldn’t capitalize, flying out weakly to left.
The offensive momentum from the previous night seemed to wane, as the Guardians couldn’t replicate their earlier success. DeLauter also had an unusual moment in the field during the third inning. He appeared to catch a fly ball near the foul line, only to drop it, resulting in a triple for Leo Rivas.
The bullpen had its share of highs and lows. Colin Holderman, a new addition to the Guardians, struggled in the sixth, giving up a two-run homer.
On a brighter note, fellow newcomer Peyton Pallette, a Rule 5 pick from the White Sox, made a promising debut. Over two innings, Pallette struck out two batters-Donovan and Raleigh-and managed to avoid any hits despite some hard contact.
His fastball showed significant improvement, adding nearly five inches of ride, which contributed to an impressive 114 stuff+ rating.
While it wasn’t the Guardians' night, there were glimpses of potential and moments of brilliance that suggest brighter days ahead.
