Guardians Growing Concern Over Gabriel Arias Start

As the Cleveland Guardians' offense stumbles out of the gate, Gabriel Arias' slow start raises serious questions about his role in a lineup desperate for improvement.

The Cleveland Guardians entered the 2026 season with some question marks around their offense, and early performances have done little to ease those concerns. With the exception of rookie standout Chase DeLauter, the lineup has been largely underwhelming.

Take All-Star third baseman Jose Ramirez, for instance. While his slow start isn't causing panic-he's known for bouncing back-others might not have the same luxury. Players like shortstop Gabriel Arias are feeling the heat, as a sluggish start could jeopardize their spot on the roster.

Arias has had a rough opening, hitting just .071. That’s 1-for-14 with no walks and six strikeouts, leading to a paltry .142 OPS.

Coming off a 2025 season where he hit .220, Arias was in a spring training battle for the middle infield with Brayan Rocchio and top prospect Travis Bazzana. With Bazzana starting in the minors, Arias and Rocchio were tapped as the Opening Day duo.

However, the Guardians' team batting average is below .200, and nearly being no-hit by the Mariners in their opening series highlights the urgency to shake things up. Rocchio isn't safe either, batting just .154.

Bazzana, who showcased his talent representing Australia at the World Baseball Classic, is waiting in the wings. Although his time at camp was brief, he’s making a case for a call-up with a .250 average and a .900 OPS in Triple-A, thanks to some extra-base hits.

Even after a promising win against the Dodgers, the Guardians can't afford to leave Bazzana's potential untapped in the minors, especially when their current options are struggling. His arrival could provide the spark they need in the lineup.
