The Cleveland Guardians got exactly the kind of help they needed on Thursday.
While the Chicago White Sox were busy beating the Detroit Tigers to pull even with Cleveland atop the AL Central at 78-75, the Guardians also picked up a boost from outside the division when the Boston Red Sox edged the Texas Rangers 4-3. That result matters a lot in the American League Wild Card picture.

Cleveland is still in position for the postseason even with Chicago holding the head-to-head edge after taking the season series 7-6. The Guardians would miss out on the division through the tiebreaker, but they remain alive through the third and final Wild Card spot.
That cushion is real. The Guardians now sit two games ahead of both the Rangers and the Toronto Blue Jays, and three games in front of the Baltimore Orioles. With so little time left, that’s meaningful breathing room, though it also leaves no room for a bad stretch.
The tiebreakers make the situation even sharper. Cleveland has the edge over Baltimore, but it lost the season series to both Toronto and Texas. Any tie with either of those clubs would knock Stephen Vogt’s team out.
The Yankees and Red Sox are basically set as the top two Wild Card teams. That leaves the final spot, along with the AL Central and AL West races, as the real battlegrounds down the stretch.
The Guardians have three series left on the schedule: at home this weekend against the Athletics, then back-to-back road sets against the Red Sox and the Kansas City Royals.
They’ve got a playoff berth in reach. Now it comes down to defending it over the final nine games.
