Guardians 2016 Postseason Hero Roberto Perez Retires

Former Guardians catcher and 2016 postseason hero Roberto Prez retires, leaving behind a legacy of elite defense and memorable moments.

Roberto Pérez may not have been the headline act for the Guardians, but he was undeniably the team's heartbeat both on and off the field. After an impactful MLB career, Pérez officially announced his retirement on Instagram this week, marking the end of an era.

Pérez's journey with the Guardians began in 2008 when he was selected in the 33rd round of the MLB Draft. He made his MLB debut in 2014, kicking off an eight-year stint as a key backup catcher. Most of his time was spent behind Yan Gomes, with a season alongside Austin Hedges after a trade brought Hedges from the Padres.

Despite a career batting average of .207, Pérez was a standout defensive catcher, earning back-to-back Gold Gloves in 2019 and 2020. His defensive prowess was matched by his postseason heroics, particularly in 2016 when he smashed four home runs during the Guardians' World Series run. His two homers in Game 1 of the World Series against the Cubs cemented his status as a Cleveland favorite.

Pérez's 2019 season was his best, setting career highs with a .239 average, 24 home runs, and 63 RBIs. Nearly half of his career home runs came that year, showcasing his offensive potential.

However, his performance at the plate dipped in 2020 and 2021, leading the Guardians to revamp their catching lineup. This transition was part of the team's evolution, paving the way for new talents like Bo Naylor.

After leaving Cleveland in 2021, Pérez joined the Pirates, hitting two home runs in 21 games before a hamstring injury ended his season. He signed with the Giants the following year but played only five games due to a rotator cuff injury, which ultimately concluded his big league journey.

Roberto Pérez's legacy with the Guardians is one of resilience and memorable moments, leaving an indelible mark on the franchise and its fans.
