In the sun-drenched fields of Goodyear, Arizona, the phrase "Pa'lante" carries a weighty significance for Daniel Espino. This Spanish mantra, meaning "keep moving forward," was a guiding light from his late father, Danilo, and it's been the backbone of Espino's journey through the turbulent seas of professional baseball.
Espino's path has been anything but smooth. Over the past four years, the talented pitcher has faced a series of daunting challenges, including two major shoulder surgeries. His time spent at the Guardians' training complex has been so extensive that he humorously claims honorary Arizonan status.
A former first-round draft pick, Espino once dazzled scouts with his electrifying velocity and devastating slider. His fastball could hit triple digits, and his potential seemed limitless. Yet, severe shoulder issues threatened to derail his promising career, leaving him sidelined and yearning for the chance to showcase his talent on a major league mound.
"It's been a roller coaster," Espino candidly shared, reflecting on his arduous journey.
In April 2022, Espino's arm issues began, sidelining him for an astounding 1,240 days. His return to the mound in Triple-A Columbus on September 20, 2025, was not just another game; it was a monumental milestone. The moment he stepped off the mound, he was enveloped in the embrace of his family, a celebration years in the making.
"It meant a lot from the mental side," Espino said. "To be able to tell myself, 'OK, you're able to do this.' It was a moment of grace and reflection, a reminder of the resilience he had shown."
Two key family members were absent that day. His grandmother, who promised to see him pitch in the big leagues, and his father, Danilo, who passed away in November 2023. Danilo, a doctor known for his miraculous work saving limbs, was a beacon of positivity and strength for Espino.
"Obviously it was devastating," Espino recalled. "He was not only my father but my best friend."
Danilo's legacy lives on in Espino's approach to his career. The elder Espino's belief in controlling what one can control has been a guiding principle for Daniel, especially through the grueling rehab process.
As Espino ramped up his latest rehab, the return of his velocity was a welcome surprise. "It was kind of shocking," he admitted. "It was like, 'Dude, you're back.'"
On February 16, Espino threw live batting practice at the Guardians' spring training complex, showcasing the talent that once made him a top prospect. Whether his future lies as a starter or reliever remains to be seen, but Espino is focused on the present and the promise of what's ahead.
"I'm not gonna compare myself to who I was before," Espino stated with determination. "I feel like I'm better."
As he continues his journey toward a major league debut, his father's words remain a powerful motivator.
